Title: Save the Bog Web site NEW
Post by: Hadrian on 07/03/2006 19:57:14
I was thinking of doing a web site on the Bog I am working on as resource for school children.  The idea is to make it interactive. First put up photos of the different things you find on it over the year and invite kid’s even big ones to name them. They link there name and school to picture as well as then putting up all the correct information on it. All this can be on a searchable data base and form etc.

What do you think and suggest?

I think that sounds like a great idea. Anything that gets kids thinking about nature has to be a good thing. By making it interactive, that would add a bit more interest.
Let me know if & when it's up & running & I'll add links from sites & my forum.

As you are aware creating content and maintaining it is the biggest problem is the biggest problem. I can do the photos and every month and more often if needed. I can also design and I think I can get my head around the software too. I may well be able to get some funding into it also. Anyone like to help with the research and the text end?

Also it would be cool to run some field trips. Maybe we could link up kids from the UK with Irish kids exchanges etc.

Well I have my first recruit I have someone who will identify and class any spiders I can find on the bog, as well as helping in instructing me on how’s and do’s of it. He also tell me he can get other experts to help me with the other creepy- crawlies. I need to get my hands on a GPS and some other equipment for keeping samples etc. Any suggestions on where to source things like this cheep if possible?

It is not really my sort of thing, but I am a member of another email list where I am fairly certain there would be some people who would be interested.

Is it all right if I repost your original post on this matter, together with your private e-mail address, so that they can get in tough with, onto that email list?

I am thinking of using Pitfalls to collect material for identification. I am thinking of sampling say half a dozen areas with a different 'feel' with up to 5-6 traps at each area, putting all the contents from any area together when collected. I plan to do this over April-November. So that’s 6 areas x 5 traps x 16 weeks = 480 samples..
