These were taken using my Fuji S5500. It's got a fabulous telephoto. I was at least 200yds from them. And I wasn't using a tripod; just holding the camera steady using a fast shutter speed.

I take my Fuji around with me practically everywhere & keep the Canon for specific shoots.

Thanks for the great photos!

That deer was aware of you even though you were over 200 yards away, amazing.

Thanks, Bernard. I'm pleased with that 1 of the young stag. As you said, he was obviously aware of me (or certainly appears to have been) even though I was that far away behind a bush.

It Takes Great pictures.. I know nothing about cameras.. Mine is supposed to do other stuff IE video etc.. but I don't know how to do it! I just learned how to erase them and upload them and I have had the camera almost a year now! LOL!~

What camera is it? I may be able to give you a few tips.

I'm a camera addict - still & video. I've got the Fuji, Canon EOS IID & a Samsung, another 1 I can't remember the make of that I use just for snapshots, a mini-cam the size of a matchbox, plus a Canon, a Sony & 2 Panasonic video cameras, 1 of which is broadcast quality.

I've got 4 full-size tripods including a Bilora fluid head with spirit level, mini-pods, clamp-pods, various spotlights & other gadgets.

Fujis are good cameras.

Is yours a point-and-shoot? If so, there should be a dial with symbols on it. The camera symbol is for ordinary pics and the video cam symbol for mpegs. That's all you need to know really.

Has no dials at all!

Yes on screen menu! It has all kind of settings on the back accessed through push button digital display, like a mini computer!you can set it for Auto, landscape, manual, portrait or movie as far as shooting mode goes!

It sounds a bit like my Fuji. I've got all sorts of on-screen options for resolution, shutter speed, aperture, multi-shot, etc, but also got the selector dial. It's also got mpeg capability with sound & can be used as a webcam.

I don't think you get sound with those & I'm pretty sure you can't fit other lenses either.

This is my Fuji.

It's got sound for movies & voice memos (voice memos can be attached to photos), & there are additional lenses for it. There's a pop-up, 3-mode flash on the top.

The on;y difference between mine & the 1 in the pics is that I've got a 512MbXD card in mine & this 1 only has 128Mb which you can see in the side shot.

Morning Doc - I have 2 questions.....

Red deer or Roe?

and,

Did you consider the Canon D40 / D50 range? If you did, then what made you buy the Fuji?

I believe they are red deer.

I chose the Fuji as it's under £200 and much higher spec than the D40/50.

I'm looking to buy Em a camera for her B'day, and it would be along these lines. I'll have a look at the web again, but there any down-sides to the Fuji? My main requirement is the capacity to "turn on and shoot", and not have any of this crystal ball reading the some digitals require. Which lens is it? I'm after something that goes from 35 - 200 perhaps....

My only gripes with it are that it takes a while to set itself up after you switch it on (about 4-5 seconds) & there is no image stabilising facility. If you have it set to Auto mode, it'll take most shots just fine without any fiddling around. That's what I use 90% of the time. Check it out here...

http://www.trustedreviews.com/digital-cameras/review/2005/03/15/Fujifilm-FinePix-S5500/p1 (http://www.trustedreviews.com/digital-cameras/review/2005/03/15/Fujifilm-FinePix-S5500/p1)

The S5500 has now been superceded by the S6500 so I don't know if you can still get the S5500.

Hmmmn, yes, this is exactly the thing that I want to avoid. With the old SLR's, it was never a problem. Is there not a stand-by mode so it's ready to go rather than a cold start?

There's not a stand-by but you can turn off power save. That way it stays on but, obviously, gets through batteries quicker.

To be honest, it's not that much of a problem. Most digital cameras take at least 2-3 seconds to warm up & unless you've only got a couple of seconds to get the shot, it doesn't make a lot of difference.
