Title: Are there shoes for flat-footed individuals?

David Potts  asked the Naked Scientists:

Hello,

I found the article on the Echelon Foot to be extremely interesting.  I am looking into how to make an athletic shoe to help my 15 year old son.  He is not an amputee, but is extremely flat footed.

He has terrible trouble running or doing anything requiring prolonged time on his feet.  He is trying to play football with a church team, but like I said, it is difficult when his feet are as flat slabs of granite.

I have been wondering if there has been any research or product development for a spring loaded athletic shoe to help people with NO spring in their arch be able to run, hike, play ball, etc.

Could you please let me know what you think about this idea, is it plausible?  I know that it is not your main area of focus, but I would appreciate your thoughts.  Such a shoe could help many people.

Thanks for your consideration,

David Potts
