Title: the difference between running, and ...running.
Post by: paul.fr on 20/12/2007 13:22:11
on a treadmill i can quite easily run for a few miles, no problem. Yet, yesterday i was just about to miss the bus and had to run a few hundred meters to catch it and was totally out of breath. Why is that?

perhaps the impact of the harder street instead of the softer surface of the tread mill along with your angst about missing the bus and adrenalin I would imagine...

My treadmill is the most expensive coat hanger I've ever bought.
A few things that I can think of (which as ewe all know is an amazing feat in itself)

On the Treadmill you're probably dressed accordingly, trainers, tracksuit, shorts etc ( In my case it's spandex of course !)

The treadmill, takes a lot of the ' effort ' out as well once it's up to speed.

You're also in control of the motion and can relax and pace yourself accordingly.

Running for a bus does not give you this luxury and the need for immediacy and air of desperation to catch the bus...as well as the inappropriate attire probably adds a lot more exertion than you realise....

well..that's my theory anyway !!....whajafink ?

I suspect it is more the angst than the surface - to run properly, to need the right rhythm and breathing, and maybe in your panic to catch the bus, you did not get the rhythm of step and breath correct (I know sometimes when I am really trying to accelerate very hard, I will even stop breathing a moment as all my energy goes into my legs - but then ofcourse I quickly run out of breath).
