Title: How much acid is in my stomach ?
Post by: neilep on 15/10/2007 10:13:52
Dearest Tummy Ticklers, Belly Bloaters, Stomach Supervisors,

I just quickly sketched this drawing of my tummy. Sorry that it's a bit haphazard but I'm also juggling twelve pineapples whilst unicycling across a tightrope with an elephant tap dancing on each shoulder !

I'm just curious as to how much acid is in the stomach during the digestive process ?...or is it a continuous flow ?....could it be a teaspoon....a dessert spoon ?...5ml ?..10ml ?

Thanks

Whatever it is, I suggest you don't use a metal spoon (tea or dessert) to measure it.

"Wood stomach acid really eat through stainless steel???"
Yes, and it's a potential problem when small children eat batteries. The contents are generally toxic and corrosive. If the steel survived the journey through the gut this wouldn't matter but they don't always do so.
I think the acid concentration in the stomach is typically about 0.01M or about 0.04%w/w

I always thought another risk of swallowing a battery was possible electrolysis of the acid (plus the potentially convulsive effect of the small electric current on the lining of the gut).
