An advert appeared in my googlemail account (a sponsor, not an email) offering "dogleads" ...

It looks like a knuckleduster to me, (at £5 I suppose it's cheaper than a fistfull of sovereign rings).
There were also far worse items on offer at the same site, under the thinly veiled description of "letter-openers".
I am shocked that weapons are being actively pushed by Google in this way, apparently Google will do buisness with anyone.

I suppose (if it is really a lead) it is meant be easier to lock around your fingers so the dog(s) doesn't run off.

The items were all weapons with some ludicrous benign label attached to them, e.g. "letter-opener"...

The items are made of polymer so would not be detectable with a metal detector.

I was horrified with what I saw when I clicked on the advert embedded in Googlemail ,
however reproducing the images here may be counterproductive.
(I did blur the text on the weapon images so the site selling them could not be found that way).

I posted that before Google ads appeared on TNS. Look at the advert which now accompanies this thread ...

Like I said above, moderators please delete this thread if you don't think it's a good idea,
(it's a pity you can't delete Google-ads).

Is it ironic that on the right upper side of this page I find a Google ad about "functional" swords for less than $100?
MODIFICATION: Sorry, just noticed that another weapons ad was already noticed.

The picture of the first item could be considered a self-defense device for those who fear getting attacked when walking the dog. I vaguely recall seeing pepper spray - dog leash combos somewhere else. Why plastic? Good question. Cheaper to make? Lighter to carry? Legal this way? Easier to get through security?

In the UK kunckledusters are definitely illegal "offensive weapons"...
Knuckle duster ‘a gift’

A PORTH man was found carrying a knuckle duster – and told police it was a present for his brother, a court has heard.
Marc Anthony Hamblyn, who lives on Trebanog Road, was found with the weapon in his trouser pocket.
This week District Judge Jill Watkins told the 28-year-old the item has to be considered an offensive weapon, whatever the reason given for possessing it, because it has “no legitimate use”.

Disguising the weapon as a "doglead" is a feeble attempt to circumvent the law.

I am certain that such a device is illegal in several states in the US as well, if(!) it is manufactured to specs that make it one. The shape alone probably is not enough. What if it is made from rubber? Yes, it is not, but my point is that making it in plastic may have allowed the manufacturer to circumvent the legal definition of an "offensive weapons" as well. Just a thought. I am not a lawyer, I just think like one sometimes. [:I]

In the UK the definition of an "offensive weapon" is not tightly specified...
Definition of Offensive Weapon
Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984 Codes of Practice A22 'Offensive weapon' is defined as any article made or adapted for use for causing injury to the person, or intended by the person having it with him for such use or by someone else. There are three categories of offensive weapons: those made for causing injury to the person; those adapted for such a purpose; and those not so made or adapted, but carried with the intention of causing injury to the person.

And if I continue thinking like lawyer [:I], this "flexibility" is a good thing to have. Ultimately it comes down to intentions. Even a glass bottle can be a deadly weapon. Box cutters have brought down airplanes and killed thousands.

In the UK the onus is on the person to prove they have a legitimate reason for carrying the alleged offensive weapon in public place.
I don't think "it's a letter-opener your honor" would stand up in a UK court, (you don't open letters in the street do you ?).
