Title: How do you get rid of spiders?
Post by: Atomic-S on 15/09/2006 04:07:24
Does anyone have a good suggestion for repelling black widow spiders from a storage shed, with means which do not pose a health hazard to persons handling objects theirein? I currently have an  unopend box of mothballs in it, which stinks the interior up considerably (for which reason I let it air out a while before entering), but that does not seem to work.

Oh dear this does seem to be a potentially dangerous problem eh ?

I have to say..I have not heard of any kind of spider repellent (can think of many silly ones) .....

My first instinct is to try and create a barrier by sealing up every crack and gap you can find......or perhaps eliminating  what is in the shed that attracts them !

Sorry..I do hope you get some decent help here.

Men are the same as women, just inside out !

This page may be relevant:-

" A Natural Spider Spray Formula for inside the house:

Dr Bronners Peppermint or Lavender Soap, or any other natural soap.
1 ounce of  Neem oil
You can also add 1 to 5 drops of any of these Essential Plant Oils (depending on your preference) to 1 quart of water:
Catnip Oil, Citronella Oil, Lavender Oil, Cinnamon Oil, Peppermint Oil, Citrus Oil, Tea Tree Oil, or other essential oils.
Add 5 tablespoons of the soap per quart water. Add one ounce of the Neem oil to the water which you have added the soap and label it. Shake well and spray inside house where spiders are seen. Test for strength. May be done as often as needed. This is not a long term solution but will provide you immediate help. Oils may stain some fabrics or light colored furnishings, test first.
Spray outside the house:
Use the same formula  to spray the foundation, eaves and soffits, and the areas around doors, windows and crawls space, or attic vents, or any area where you see spiders congregating. You can also use any citrus based cleaner like Citra Solv at 1 oz per quart water. Spray around the outside of the house or where spiders congregate. "

Using Neem Oil mixed with essential oils will help drive them away. Also make sure you are getting rid of other insects in the shed so they have nothing to feed on.

I love my old house, but so do spiders. My finished basement in particular seems full of spiders, but I also see them all over the house. I know Fall seems to send them indoors a bit more than other times of the year, but I just don't want them! It's bad enough they spin their webs outside all over my porch. Any suggestions on how to rid my house of spiders?

I take a sheet of paper, a glass, and a stepladder.
- I put the glass over the spider, and slide the sheet of paper between the glass and the wall/ceiling.
- I then take the glass+paper+spider outside, and deposit the spider in a convenient tree. Tedious but effective.

Or you could take the approach of my uncle in Queensland (Australia), who had a single hunstman spider in his house, usually found resting behind the bedroom curtain. This one was maybe 6 cm across, but they rid the house of all other insects!

Most spiders don't bother you if you don't bother them.

Yes, I regard them as a living form of flypaper and we tolerate a certain extent of spider activity because they help with pest control!

It depends on the spider. I don't mind the small ones but the big ones, thin or thick, are really bothering me. When I see a small one I try to let it out. The big ones I spray with bug spray. Too scary!
