I couldn't help noticing that my karma rating initially went up but then went back down again, indicating that rather than support someone of whom they approved, some people would rather put down people of whom they disapprove. I think I now understand why it's labeled Karma [;D]

Lol...yeah..it is all odd to me.....I think participation alone says a lot for the frum...Everyone contributes....and it does seem a bit silly...just my opinion...although I did throw a few out, in like what Neily would say, in the name of science or emperical study! Lol...

btw, who is getting ads about "ask nature to help you yagnas"/"remove karma yagnas receive blessings"?

It could well be a disincentive to post too - if someone thinks that they are helping, but receives none, this may lead them to think "why bother" (if they felt that karma was important in the first place). Also, if there is going to be karma, the posters need to know which posts gained the karma, and which lost karma. How do you improve your answers if you can't get feedback?
Personally, I think it's a bit silly and definately unscientific. I would have thought that someone posting a response saying "thanks" is better. If i felt so inclined, I could just sit here and arbitrarily provide or remove karma, so it's a little pointless. Perhaps a better solution would be similar to the WikiAnswers (I think that's it anyway) where you could mark individual answers that were helpful, rather than the person.

I think this whole post of yours is just sour grapes, you are unhappy because you are on just one karma point and people like C4M (a newbie) are in the mid teens.
The ratings system indicates that the answers given by C4M are fifteen times more informative than your own, I can therefore dismiss this reply of yours and go dock you another karma point. good bye...

I'm assuming that the rest of your post is in jest (though perhaps for anyone else reading it, it would appear not).
My point is entirely valid, and is there to provide my opinion from an impartial point-of-view. I can do this because I am an adult and would provide my unbiased opinion irrespective of whether it gains me a karma point or not. Your removing my karma point only goes to show how ridiculous the process is.

The concept of karma is that the actions of people are reflected in their karma. Broadly speaking, if you do positive things you get positive karma and if you do negative things you get negative karma. Thus, the act of someone clicking the +/- karma buttons against a post is actually reflected in their karma, not the karma of the person who made the post.
This is really what amused me and made me realise that the buttons are actually well named [:D]

Thank you very much. I'd like to reciprocate but it doesn't seem to be possible to assign karma to posts in a thread that you've started; there are no karma buttons visible for me in this thread. I'll try to remember to do it in another thread though [:D]

Personally, I'd like to see an end to this karma silliness - it's clearly divisive as well as partisan (you've only got to see who has the highest scores) and, as someone has said, it's unscientific.

Thank you. Although I should point out that the reason you can not give me any karma points in this topic seems to be because it is in "just chat", this obviously makes a difference!
The only question I now have is do i take away one karma point from you for not knowing that? On this occasion, I will let it slide.

I don't. It has to be the most ridiculous idea that has ever been placed on this forum. Could I please take some karma points off the person whos idea it was. It would make me feel sooo much better. I am going to give dentstudent a point on another thread for expressing what we all feel. Of course this will have to be on another thread so if you could tell me what you have posted on recently I will go and give you a good thumbing.
