Dearest Bruiseologists,
As a sheepy I of course hate bruises...Brusies are nasty browny purple things that are patchy and clash with my wool.......look here is an arm with a bruise on it !

Nice eh ?...it's gone now !
Now then, wifey tells me that when she have ever given blood....the nursey person has told her that she must take the paster off after about an hour else a bruisey thing will develop !
When the above arm underwent the same procedure the plaster (with cotton wool) was left on for many many hours concealed beneath a jumper sleeve !...so...imagine the surprise when the plaster was ripped off to reveal such bruisey-non-joyness !!
So, the question is...
Why Does Leaving A Plaster On For Over An Hour After A Donation of Blood (for tests) Give Ewe A Bruise ?
Ewe see...I really do not know......perhaps ewe know !!..or maybe someone ewe know does know...If ewe think they know...ring them up now and ask them !!....convey the discourse of the communication therein right here !....enjoy the relish of satisfaction that the sharing doth reward ewe with.

You can't trust these nurses, and I should know.
The only reason they make you put a sticky plaster over the bit where they jabbed you is so that you can't see the terrible bollo slightly imperfect way they poked your vein. Basically, it's so you'll be well beyond the hospital before you see the problem and are unlikely to come running back in the door shouting things like,
"Ere! What did you do to my bleedin' arm then! You've not heard the last of this, let me tell you!"

So, it's really an old wives tale eh ?...it's just that I have undergone this procedure many times and have never had a bruise there *le humpth* No science to it whatsoever ! [:o]
So, ewe gave the blood, she kebab'd ewe.....ewe married her....nice !!

The bruise is due to blood which has leaked from the wound, not due to presence or absence of the plaster placed over the aforementioned wound.
You're supposed to leave the plaster on for more than an hour ...
A plaster will be applied to the area to keep it clean. It should be kept on for a minimum of 6 hours

Thanks Rd....this is contrary though to the advice wifey was given.....in that she should not leave the plaster on longer than an hour else a bruise will show...

If the bruises were plaster-shaped then that would support the hypothesis.

I still think it's a
load of bollo bit dubious. In my case, the sticky plaster is quite unnecessary if the procedure is done properly. If I apply pressure to the vein for about five seconds, it stops bleeding.
Maybe they insist of covering up the wound so that people don't pass out at the sight of their own blood?

... if you are wearing a tight sleeve, we may ask you to remove that article of clothing.
A tight sleeve can act as a tourniquet and cause congestion in the vein increasing the chance of bruising.

I suppose if the plaster could restrict circulation, (by keeping the skin in tension or compression) , it could prevent the blood which has leaked from being dispersed and cause a small obvious bruise rather than a larger but less obvious one.

nicely done ....pressure is good......I'm ok with the blood thing and actually like to see the needle go in....I think next time I'll ask if I can do it myself !...paint a little target and stuff !

I reckon this isit RD...the plaster ie: sticky thing with cotton wool was quite tight !..by jove !!!....etc etc !!

It's fine when they put it on, but I've got rather hirsute arms. Of course, Mrs G just loves to rip the things off so she can inflict as much pain as possible. When I complain I get the usual lecture,
"You men! What wimps. You don't know the half of pain, let me tell you." etc etc

You guys are funny and I almost always remove the plaster right away as it seems to make no difference at all except keeping the needle ***** site clean. I bruise basically with every poke regardless of plaster or not.

Medications which thin the blood, (e.g. aspirin), can be responsible for that. They increase the bleeding time (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bleeding_time).
