Dr. Raj Jeganathan asked the Naked Scientists:
Let me say that yours is the best Science podcast on Internet (http://www.thenakedscientists.com/HTML/podcasts/) and professionally done with interesting features. Keep it up.
My Question is about the Dooms day or the day when the world ends. December 21st 2012 is predicted as this disastrous day by Mayan Calendar, Chinese I-ching and several other prophets.
Astronomically, I heard that this is the day it seems the earth will be aligned with the centre of the galaxy where mass will be maximum and hence maximum gravity. They also predict on this fateful day earth is likely to switch its magnetic poles.
Do you have any thought on this or is this is an another hoax flying around The previous dooms day was 12,950 BC. The earth is still there !!
What do you think?

There is no reason to believe that any alignments will cause asny significant changes but there is always the continuing risk that something significantly large will hit the earth and we seem a bit overdue for an event like this if you really want something to worry about. however there is absolutely no reason to believe that such an event is more likely on the day that you suggest.

The Mayan Calendar ends, so what. It starts again, like our year, we don't assume that the world will end on new years day.
How on earth would the earths mass or gravity be increased if it were in the centre of the galaxy?
-
If I was given £1 for every loony who has climbed to the top of a mountain one day because they expected that day was going to be the end of the world, I would v. rich.
It will only be from an, as yet, totally unexpected source that the Earth will be seriously damaged.
BTW, how is a single point supposed to 'line up' with another single point? Two points always lie on a line.
