Title: Why are we putting so much effort into looking for intelligent life?

Geoff has a bit of a stumper:

Why are we putting so much effort into looking for intelligent life on other planets when we can't find it on Earth?

I'll admit I'm scratching my head on this one...any thoughts?

Why are we putting so much money into the particle accelerators, rockets, space probes to other planets , search for life, other planets, pictures of black holes etc.

Military planning and commercial gain. Same as the space race, all about nuclear bombs military coms and surveylance. Nasa dont want to alarm the public, but the us government has a plan in the event of an alien invasion.

It would be interesting to find signs of life on a remote planet but due to the long transmission delays involved there would seem to be no possibility of any conversation
