Title: How can we help our American allies in the war on the Moon
Post by: syhprum on 09/12/2018 00:27:01
With China upping its efforts to colonize the Moon it is inevitable that war will break out there between China and America.
With our special relationship as Americas oldest ally we will be duty bound to go to their aid but how will we get there ? Should we not be developing a transport system instead of wasting our money on NHS etc.

We don’t seem to be America’s best ally anymore. Trump is happy to dump promise of trade deals.

The American Way in warfare is to turn up late and take all the credit (WWI, WWII), lose (Vietnam), or back the wrong side (Afghanistan, Syria, Iraq....). I see little future in coming to their aid anywhere, anytime.

Alan,

I agree with most of what you wrote. however Americans are often criticized for getting involved in world issues too quickly (of which I agree, as an American) and you are saying we come into conflicts too late (and I also agree that in WWI and II we should have engaged sooner).

I have no idea where the country stands at the present time, altho I personally am more of a Libertarian politically; and lean toward letting the rest of the world sort out their own problems.

however, if we are attacked, I would retaliate with force, not ***** foot around and fight a "limited" engagement.

p.s.: I have never heard anyone have a bad word for the Brits, Canadians, or Aussies; among others.)

(haha...that word before "foot" was not used rudely; but it appears the software is a bit PC sensitive) :)

Any fight over possession of the Moon would not take place on the Moon.   The easiest way to win that battle is to sever supply lines much closer to their source.
This isn't like two nations battling over an island in the Pacific where each of their supply lines start on opposite sides of the Ocean.  Both the US and China would have to supply the Moon from the same place, the Earth.  It is much easier to knock out a supply ship while it is in, or just leaving, LEO then it would to fight a war on the Moon.

once again, here is the opportunity for the UN to step in, and declare the moon, mars and any other extra terrestrial bodies to be off limits to claims by any Earth power.

I believe such sanctions against colonization of regions on earth itself are already in place; why not the moon etc?

I can never understand why America got involved in WWI her two largest industrial competitors were busy destroying themselves so much the better for America

It is very difficult to understand the origins of WWI from a modern perspective. Why was Archduke Ferdinand so important as to merit the deaths of tens of millions, when musicians and US presidents can be assassinated with no secondary effect?

Before anything significant can stay on the Moon, or come back from the Moon, there needs to be production of air and/or fuel on the Moon. That represents a significant technological and manufacturing-scale development on the Moon which will take many years.

At that time, there could be collisions between robots harvesting water or helium 3.

In the meantime, the war will be:
- In a repeat of the Cold War: Strident claims that "Our rockets/technology/social system is better than yours"
- Tariffs and Trade embargoes (but the world is now more interdependent than in the past, so this will just hurt everyone)
- Arresting executives and staff of companies from the other side

or as more commonly stated "our dicks are bigger than yours" :)

I think it was touch and go whether a war started over the killing of JFK it was only because of the improvements of communications between states it was avoided and the refusal of a submarine commander to fire a nuclear missile despite orders

unfortunately, not all military commanders (on every side) have the courage to defy orders to the detriment of their careers.

I wonder how much hell he went thru explaining his insubordination.

Totally, this is an example of assertiveness at the highest level

altho going a bit off topic:

the US and Russia are having a bit of a tussle lately as well as our long time allies world wide. (please don't blame me, i'm just a citizen of the US; i don't make policy).

of all battles the US might engage in, the most horrific would be against the Russians.

they are the toughest SOBs in the world...just ask Napolean and Hitler. they fight to the death in sub zero temperatures, with little food or weapons...altho i may not agree with their countries politics; i certainly admire their courage and fortitude.
