Title: Discuss: The Science of Addiction
Post by: thedoc on 05/11/2009 10:57:09
Hooked on the Naked Scientists? This week we're looking into the science of addiction, finding out how smoking alters the teenage brain, why a mixture of brain chemistry and psychological habits make drugs hard to kick, and how addiction re-wires the brain in a similar way to school.  Also, how a good night's sleep could stave off diabetes, why traffic pollutes your IQ and why your next prescription could be a placebo!  Plus we bring you the first in our series of Rising Stars, young researchers reporting from the coalface of science, and in Kitchen Science we show you how to levitate a squid!
Listen to this Show (http://www.thenakedscientists.com/HTML/podcasts/show/2008.01.06/)

If you want to discuss this show, or ask a question, this is the place to do it.

I think an addiction indicates you are no longer in control, the thing you are addicted to has control over you.  I'm sure you can quit this forum at any time... [;D]

Hi,
I'm new there, look through some threads and seems like I have a story for each of them haha ;D
Decided to write here too.
Of course, addiction is not a funny thing.
A few years ago my family faced this problem. My sister met a 'bad' guy. Smoking, alcohol, drugs... A year passed and he left her and what was next? Of course, she couldn't live without all that stuff anymore. We were trying to help her, we consulted our doctor. But the only way out was a rehab center.
I spent hours searching for the info on the Internet. Read so many articles. I liked this site - Addiction Resource. Can say for sure that rehab helped her. She spent there 4 months. Then she lived at home, then one month in rehab again and now she feels perfect. At least much better than before.

Of course. Addiction is addiction in the sense that it it's destructive, gets worse over time, is difficult to stop and according to 12 Step Programs is physical, mental and spiritual in nature.
