Chemistry / Could CO2 be sequestered from the atmosphere to make Graphene?
« on: 13/11/2015 03:19:33 »
If this is possible then it would definitely be a bonus.  Removing carbon from the air would be a positive use for one of the green house gases.

Physiology & Medicine / Re: Could prolific Nuclear testing since 1945 be linked to increases in cancer?

A partial list of non-cancer health effects of human exposure to radiation:

Downs Syndrome
Hydrocephaly
Microhydrocephaly
Cleft Lip and Palate
Epilepsy
Kidney and Liver Damage
Thyroid Disease
Low Birthweight
Increased Infant Mortality
Increased Stillbirth
Genetic Mutations/Chromosomal Aberrations
Spinal Defects
Congenital Malformations

A compilation of radiation Studies Showing Health Effects.....

This is all actually quite scary!!

Physiology & Medicine / Re: Could there be life after death beyond our experience?
« on: 16/10/2015 13:47:49 »
After we die, someone else is born.  It is called evolution. As night follows day, as you say, the cycle of death is what gave us life.  How many people died before you, so you could be born?  How many sperm died in the race so you could fertilise that egg.

To imply that falling asleep and waking up means you are reborn after death is a leap into the creative imagination and completely unfounded in any kind of rational scientific context.

Physiology & Medicine / Could prolific Nuclear testing since 1945 be linked to increases in cancer?
« on: 16/10/2015 13:37:37 »
There is a youtube video that shows in animated form the nuclear tests conducted from 1945 - 1998.  The link is as follows

After watching this video I had to wonder about various factors.....

The video only shows official tests.  What it does not show are the many nuclear accidents and leaks.

Given how dangerous even small levels of radiation can be to the human body, at what point could we say there might be a connection?

As we know many of the tests conducted were above ground and the airborn particulates, that are highly radioactive, would be carried by prevailing winds to certain destinations.   Are there places in the world where cancer rates are higher than average that also happen to be essentially downwind of these test sites?

Where are the worms? Everyone knows to make a wormhole you need a worm!  In the case of cosmological wormholes, I wonder what the equivalent would be?  Energy?

Geek Speak / Re: How do I create a text list of files in a directory in Windows 8.1?
« on: 02/06/2015 03:09:34 »
I just had a quick look as I am using 8.1.  Now I may be entirely off the mark here but this might work for you.  In the control panel go to the indexing options.  Under Modify, it allows you to choose a specific directory or folder. In the indexing options you can then select the advanced settings.  From the advanced setting you can then choose what type of files you want indexing.

I think the solution you are looking for may be available here. A little further investigation might be required from your part as to what results indexing files produces.  The location of the indexed files is displayed on the main menu of the indexing options.

Please make a backup before you try anything though!  I am certainly no expert on this but suspect the solution you are looking for lies within this indexing function.

PmbPhy, I find this debate counter productive and illogical and I also feel you are posing somewhat rhetorical questions.

Hello PmbPhy.  Well I wondered how long it would take before I encountered yourself in a thread.

I meant in the context of the general scientific community as oppose to this particular thread.
Scientists who do not use the scientific method must be quite rare I suspect, quite the contrary to the posters opinion.
And excuse me for saying but, as this is a thread then how would I make the last post?  And I read all the previous posts which is what inspired me to make a comment, nothing unusual about that I feel.

Why is it that people who see UFO's seem to assume that there is a little green/grey alien sitting inside it?  You make a huge assumption in that fact by automatically thinking the little green/grey dude is able to withstand huge amount of g's as his craft accelerates or turns corners at incredible speed.

Just to bring things back down to Earth a little, our spaceships that perform beyond the limit of human survivablity are unmanned.

The fact that a craft can perform beyond the tolerance of human survivability does not in any way suggest that alien life has successfully found a way to defy the laws of physics.

Geology, Palaeontology & Archaeology / Re: Rock/mineral vase - please help ID it
« on: 01/06/2015 03:23:22 »
Are there any marks on the vase to identify the maker?  Normally these can be found on the base.  Normally only unique pieces lack this information and will only have the makers signature.

Another thing to consider is that your guest may have been a bit tricksy... Considering clay is a mineral.. the following is a quote from Wiki on clay; Clay is a fine-grained natural rock or soil material that combines one or more clay minerals with traces of metal oxides and organic matter.

I have trawled the internet looking at images of vases and the only ones I could find that resemble the one you have are made from clay. Looking at your picture it also appears that there is a black glaze and there are some horizontal lines on the surface that suggest the material was plastic whilst being worked.

Maybe if your still not 100% sure and want more investigation then post a picture of the underside of the vase and also a picture of the vase in its entirety.

Can I be weeded out of the system? How do you know my pet doesn't have theories? Ha, sheesh, what the heck is a null hypothesis anyway, who needs em. Does a majority count as more than 50% or are there more variables then scientist, non scientist?

Anyone for tea?

Physics, Astronomy & Cosmology / Re: Is the universe finely balanced for life or is it a happy accident
« on: 30/05/2015 05:03:19 »
I have a pet theory that the Universe is life.  This is maybe because of the coincidence that everything in the Universe could be described from a biological perspective eg. the Universe is born, the neural like network of matter and dark matter, the evolving Universe.

Yes I know it's pretty far fetched but until someone proves me wrong I'm happy to linger on the thought that maybe the Universe itself is a happy accident of life.   [:o]

New Theories / Re: How does mankind know that we are being pulled to the ground?Im havin doubts!
« on: 30/05/2015 04:44:31 »
I would be interested to know what objects, that are visible around us, today rely on the fact that we are being pulled towards the ground.   [:P]

And not only that but how would these things still function if we were not being pulled to the ground....   [:I]

Some possible examples for consideration: cars, shoes, hydroelectric dams, rain, rockets, golf and even the Moon.

Just Chat! / Re: Do science and religion have any common ground?
« on: 30/05/2015 04:33:56 »
Common ground: nutters, fruit-loops, genius, rules on clothing, the use of books, lectures (although in religion it's called preaching), the construction of expensive big buildings, bias, a reliance to some extent on charitable donations and I think you get my drift so feel free to add some more :-)

Physiology & Medicine / Re: Is paedophilia a mental illness?
« on: 30/05/2015 04:10:23 »
Dear pecos_bill,

There was library access that was supposed to be once a week.  However due to some very unhappy guards we were lucky if we got this once a month. The guards in HMP Wandsworth also refused to take people for appointments with the Dr inside the prison.  The reason for this is that they were unhappy with staffing cutbacks.  In effect the guards seemed to be deliberately trying to coax some kind of riot.

Regarding your logic on having to be mad to go into prison.  This would not only suggest that paedophiles are mentally ill but all criminals. Not only that but remember laws are not the same in all countries, so if you buy weed in England your mad but not in Holland or parts of the U.S.

Having just been through a pretty tough period I am sure you will also understand that I want to try and forget about it.  So it is for that reason and my mental health that I do not reinforce the traumatic experience I suffered by discussing it any further. I hope you can understand.

On a final note; I think they are mentally ill.  I am pretty sure most people would agree with me.
