Yes, I know a beaver with a splinter that penetrated it's brain. Sad story.

I was talking about in the mouth. Do they have tough mouths in order to avoid getting hurt.

No. The wood we eat is fresh and moist which means it bends easier. Plus, when we nibble, we nibble in such a way as to avoid getting large shards in our mouths.
