Dangerous corruption of language. Data is stuff you measure. Test data is fair enough: an input intended to test your black box, but it's only useful if you know what the output should be - and that's a problem for the Believers in AI because by definition you don't know what to expect. But "synthetic data" is just lies - fake news with numbers. 

Pilots or operators of other machineries are commonly trained with simulators, which is a form of generator of synthetic data. As long as its limitation determined beforehand, it's still useful in most situations.

(a) therefore it isn't strictly universal unless you think every atom in the universe is conscious, or that the presence of one conscious entity (whatever that might mean) confers its goal to an infinite volume of space.  But in that case the existence of any two conscious entities with different goals (e.g. predator and prey) means that there is no universal goal.

Do you find a goal in an atom?
How do you define consciousness?
Don't you think that both of them want to live and thrive? I.e. extend the existence of consciousness into the future, which is the universal terminal goal.

Universal: (a - literal) found everywhere or (b - figurative) present in or adopted or practised by all  humans. You have shown no proof either.

a. It's literal. Everywhere you find a goal, you'll find at least one conscious entity.
b. Where did you smuggle the word "human" from?
What kind of proof do you need?

And so far the only suggestion of a UTG is your own invention, with no test of your assertion that it is universal. In what way is it more valid than, say, Putin's or Hamas's goal?

My conclusion on the universal terminal goal is obtained through deductive logical reasoning from literal definition of each word in the phrase itself. Inductive reasoning through analogies also gives the same conclusion.

In this clip from episode 894 of I Doubt It Podcast, Brittany Page and Jesse Dollemore discuss a recent article from the New York Times in which several voters were interviewed about the upcoming election and who they see themselves voting for - as well as why.

Even in the most democratic countries, not everyone is given the right to vote. Those who are regarded as lacking the capacity to make rational decision for the wellbeing of the country are generally barred from voting, like children, criminals, and people with severe mental illness.
In the past, women and people of some races were not given the right to vote either.

It reminds me of Hanlon's razor.

Douglas W. Hubbard quoted Hanlon's razor and added "a clumsier but more accurate corollary ...: 'Never attribute to malice or stupidity that which can be explained by moderately rational individuals following incentives in a complex system.'"

It has similarity with some eastern view on morality, while immoral actions are considered to be caused by ignorance. They can be wrong in determining the terminal goal, the basic facts related to the case, or the causality relationships.

Because we are human. We build machines to serve us, not the other way around. And you have no idea what a universal value might be.

And what's so special about intelligence? On a crude measure like,say, an IQ test, Osama bin Laden would score higher than my dog. But my dog doesn't hate Jews or Americans, so I'd rather support her values and goals than his.   

There are many human values embraced by currently existing human individuals, and some of them are mutually exclusive. Human values aligned with the universal terminal goal needs to be conserved. On the other hand, human values opposing the universal terminal goal needs to be changed or removed.

Intelligence signify impacts, either positively or negatively. In general, higher intelligence potentially make bigger impacts, and harder to stop/prevent.

The phrase "synthetic data" should strike terror into the heart of any rational human. It's the stuff of Trumpism.

It's analogue to thought experiments. It's also like questions and answers in textbooks used by students given by their teachers. The data can be used to check the internal consistency of our current models and assumptions, but they can't be used to check the consistency of our models and assumptions with physical reality.
For analogy, the large models act as the teachers for the smaller models using simpler data. Learning and understanding are often regarded as data compression process.

Generative A.I. Will Change Everything.

I think not. It's just another tool in the hands of humans, so still motivated by greed, superstition or altruism.

Which human? Eventually the jobs of CEO, investors, politicians and lawmakers will be taken over by AI.
Sooner or later we need to solve fundamental problem of goal alignment between humans and machines, which needs a common basic understanding of the universal terminal goal, universal moral compass, and accurate model of how the universe works. The later it gets solved, the more damages would be done, which would be a less efficient route to the future.

OpenAI seem to realize the importance of goal alignment in their efforts to develop ASI. They also need to determine which human values do they want their AI model to be aligned with. Why can't it be the other way around, where humans need to align their values to the universal values which are also shared with the most intelligent agents possible?

Superintelligence will be the most impactful technology humanity has ever invented, and could help us solve many of the world?s most important problems. But the vast power of superintelligence could also be very dangerous, and could lead to the disempowerment of humanity or even human extinction.

While superintelligence seems far off now, we believe it could arrive this decade.
(Here we focus on superintelligence rather than AGI to stress a much higher capability level. We have a lot of uncertainty over the speed of development of the technology over the next few years, so we choose to aim for the more difficult target to align a much more capable system.)

Managing these risks will require, among other things, new institutions for governance and solving the problem of superintelligence alignment:

Currently, we don't have a solution for steering or controlling a potentially super-intelligent AI, and preventing it from going rogue. Our current techniques for aligning AI, such as reinforcement learning from human feedback, rely on humans? ability to supervise AI. But humans won?t be able to reliably supervise AI systems much smarter than us, and so our current alignment techniques will not scale to superintelligence. We need new scientific and technical breakthroughs.
(Other assumptions could also break down in the future, like favorable generalization properties during deployment or our models? inability to successfully detect and undermine supervision during training.)

Our approach
Our goal is to build a roughly human-level automated alignment researcher. We can then use vast amounts of compute to scale our efforts, and iteratively align superintelligence.

To align the first automated alignment researcher, we will need to 1) develop a scalable training method, 2) validate the resulting model, and 3) stress test our entire alignment pipeline:

To provide a training signal on tasks that are difficult for humans to evaluate, we can leverage AI systems to assist evaluation of other AI systems (scalable oversight). In addition, we want to understand and control how our models generalize our oversight to tasks we can?t supervise (generalization).
To validate the alignment of our systems, we automate search for problematic behavior (robustness) and problematic internals (automated interpretability).
Finally, we can test our entire pipeline by deliberately training misaligned models, and confirming that our techniques detect the worst kinds of misalignments (adversarial testing).
We expect our research priorities will evolve substantially as we learn more about the problem and we?ll likely add entirely new research areas. We are planning to share more on our roadmap in the future.

Most demonstation videos of homopolar motor only show that electric current across a magnetic field can cause angular motion, but they don't clearly show the conservation of angular momentum. That's what I intend to show in my next experiments.

At the beginning of 20th century, discourse on moral philosophy had become more abstract, impractical for common folks. Introduction of moral dilemma like the trolley problems made moral philosophy look useful again, but most discussions I found online put too much stress on acute impact or immediate consequences. Chronic impact or accumulative or indirect consequences are rarely mentioned.

Intensity of a spherical light source is quartered when the distance is doubled. This and many other experiments show that light always propagate like a continuous wave, until it's detected. Which means it interact with some material objects non-linearly. That's what's called wave function collapse, IMO.
This non-linearity reduces information contained in the known system, just like saturation in the electronic components.

In my other thread on microwave transmission, I've shown some effects of polarization which have similarities with the effects in visible light spectrum. But I haven't found the analogue of conjoined twin polarizer.

Here is another video investigating the effect of twin polarizer.

It shows the effect of double polarizer when they are close to each other but are still separated electrically. The last part shows the polarisation of microwave coming out from the last polarizer.

The next video will show the effect of double polarizer when they are close to each other and electrically connected, so stay tuned.

In the end of the experiment, it's shown that rotating the receiver can make the reading down to 0, which means that the microwave is linearly polarized instead of eliptical or circularly polarized.

Aviation is a fine example of the opposite. Mach 2 passenger travel was available in the 1970s, and the 550-seat A380 flew in 2006, but both have been abandoned in favor of 300-seat subsonic aircraft that actually meet the need to move people over long distances in comfort and at a sensible price.

Speed is not the only consideration for commercial aviation. Other factors might be thought as more important, like safety, price, and convenience. When problems in those other factors can be solved, the speed problem can be economically pursued as well.

But we know that at least one of them did attack the Pentagon.
