General Science / Is it true that alcohol makes us “gain” weight in two ways?
« on: 16/01/2012 15:37:11 »

Is it true that alcohol makes us “gain” weight in two ways?:
1.   For the calories of the drink itself.
2.   For the consequent slowdown of our metabolism due to alcohol consumption.
Is this true? How true?
We can know how many calories are there in alcohol drinks, but how much is our metabolism slowed down?

Thank you
Emilio

Question of the Week / QotW - 11.01.30 - What happens if you use 99.9% effective sanitizer twice?
« on: 26/01/2011 11:40:30 »
Oh, this is fun! [;D] [;D] ....

Great, all great, but if we know that there is a strand of germs which always survive, then which are those super-ultra-invincible-puppies…? shouldn’t we be trying to study and get to know them?
And if we manufacture the next sanitizer to kill that strand… will it still be 99.9% effective?

I suggest you ask your question on this forum: www.cannibalismtoday.org

If that link goes anywhere, I'll eat myself!

egg eating would not be considered cannibalism... [???] [???] some people eat their nails too.... [:0]

Let’s say we get an egg from a woman’s ovary, let’s say –for the sake of argument— we can make it grow to an adequate size (proportional to the woman as the chicken’s egg is to the chicken)… let’s say we poach it (can’t hard boil it because it lacks a shell)… what would it taste like? (let´s add salt, of course).

So... do humans “taste like chicken”? [:o]

General Science / How old is the Earth - really?

Actually, the proportion of He produced in the BB was much greater than I thought and most of the He around today is primeval too.

There aren't many Helium compounds though, and most of them are unstable, so most He is still in an elemental form.

 [???]
Who is "He" and how is he produced in a BlackBerry? [;)]

I think that the clearest evidence that there is INTELLIGENT life elsewhere in the universe rests in the fact that they have NOT come HERE...  [:D] [:D] [:D]

General Science / artificial electromagnetic field for Mars?
« on: 29/04/2010 13:19:57 »

If we were to build huge magnets –electromagnets— and (just as satellites) make them orbit Mars, with solar panels to charge them… could we generate an electromagnetic field (such as Earth’s) and improve the planet’s habitability?
And, for that matter… could we do the same here in Earth to benefit our planet?
Thank you
Emilio

General Science / is there a second sonic boom upon reaching mach 2?
« on: 26/04/2010 16:19:39 »
Hello, when a plane reaches the speed of sound, and breaks the sound barrier there is a loud bomm... I would like to know if there is a second sonic boom upon reaching mach 2

Thank you
Emilio

General Science / If we run faster to Rocky’s Theme, will we love deeper to Lara’s Theme?
« on: 08/04/2010 17:12:08 »

But mood is one thing...
Adrenaline rush in a marathon at mile 25 when you hear Chariots Of Fire is another... (when you hear the music, that is, because if you can hear the actual chariots, the flames are very near and you are very dead  [:D] [:D] [:D])

The part of the question regarding the music of Rocky has to do with adrenaline (?), our body responds to that stimulus in that way, that much I know (I am a runner)... the rest is just conjecture...  Does a romantic theme In ANY way has a similar effect?
Forget about James Bond, he can never be surpassed.

If we run faster to Rocky’s Theme, will we love deeper to Lara’s Theme (or for that matter be a better secret agent when we listen to James Bond Theme?)  [;)]

Emilio - Cats & dogs are different species. As far as I'm aware cowboys & cavalrymen (& the occasional 49er) are, in the majority of cases, as human as the Native Americans. There are, of course, exceptions. John Wayne is a case in point. If he gets shot he says "Now you've made me mad" and keeps going.

I know... I know... couldn't think of a better answer.. [:I] [:o)]
