I was a well known astronomer and alchemist working for the Czech King and my assistant went on to become famous in his own right.

Still no takers eh! Perhaps I have not really given enough of the right clues.
I am credited with the most accurate astronomical observations of my time, and the data will used by my assistant to derive the laws of planetary motion. I catalogued the planets and stars with enough accuracy to determine whether the Ptolemaic or the Copernican system described the heavens more accurately.

Who am I?
I am the son of a wood-carver who became a Knight of the realm and a Fellow of the Royal Society.
Although I am a chemist responsible for the discovery of a number of elements, my name is, perhaps, better known for my invention which is named after me.

One of them, yes.
I was born in Cornwall, England in the later part of the 18th. century.
My work on electrolysis lead me to the discovery of Na, Ca and K. I also discovered a few other elements and my invention could have been described as 'a glimmer of hope' in the safety of miners, which earned me the Rumford medal in 1816.

Who am I?
I was born in the American state of Maine in the dying years of the 19th century. I did not graduate. I began as an apprentice in a mill at the age of 12, then joined the US Navy in 1912, where I learned wireless telegraphy.
In 1945 a chance happening lead me to an invention which is now in common use in homes all over the world.

Next clue:
The chance happening lead to a rather messy pocket when I was working with a magnetron.

Another clue:
The first of these *************** now in use around the world, was 5' 6" high and weighed in at over 1/3rd of a ton. So they were the preserve of commercial establishments. Today they are small enough to fit into any kitchen, where they belong!

Hence Percy Spencer.
I think you gave too many clues on that one.
