Title: Can I Save Electricity By Opening My Fridge Doors In this Cold Weather ?
Post by: neilep on 07/01/2010 15:09:13
As a sheepy I of course have an extra fridge freezer in the garage !..It's obvious isn't it ?..Woolly Sheepy = Extra Outside Fridge Freezer...blatant even !

Look, here it is. (for those who are new to the world of fridge/freezers and their open and closed doors abilities I have provided ewe with two pictures)

Nice eh ?

Opened and closed every Tuesday

Ewe may or may not know but it's like well cold here in UK land at the moment  and I was wondering if I could save some pennies by turning my fridge freezer off and just keeping the doors open ?.....Will I lose/gain any benefit if I do so ? whajafink ?

Hugs & shmishes

A freezer is often colder than the outside air. If the outside temperature is colder than freezing then you have the risk of freeze damage to the contents of the refrigerator.

You could run an experiment for us and report your findings.

Thank ewe Stereoloist,

In some parts of the UK the temperature has dropped to minus 18 (centigrade) with more to come apparently.....would this be cold enuff do ewe think ?

So its all your fault is it?

SHUT THAT BLOODY DOOR SHEEPY, ITS FREEZING HERE.

BTW, freezers kept in garages/sheds where the temperature drops below zero may not work.

Thanks Don..yep, I take full responsibility !!

Actually, it's not even a garage it's a glass covered area that we inherited when we moved here and when we got a new fridge freezer I thought instead of chucking the old one in next doors garden or in the nearest brook, lets just plug it in the ' garage' and see if it works, three years later...so far so good..

PS: Great forum of yours by the way !! [:)]

Well thank ewe kind sir. Its coming along, I just need to ram it home to others to come and join The Silly Sausage Forum  for a laugh. I'm not trying to pull the wool over peoples eyes, I really do need some members. (The wife would agree with that in one particular aspect!)

Come and view The Silly Sausage Forum here (http://www.sillysausage.freeforums.org/) or type http://www.sillysausage.freeforums.org into your address bar....... then register and start amusing people.

Basically the outside temperature may still not be quite as cold as your freezer, so it you turned off the freezer and left things to nature, your food may not be quite as cold or keep so well/long as it would normally.

That said, if the freezer is in a cold environment its rate of heat gain (thermal leakage through the wall-insulation) will be very low, and heat-pumps (which is essentially what a fridge mechanism is) are more efficient as the temperature-difference falls... so your fridge/freezer will use way less energy than usual if simply left to its own devices, if it's in a cold place already.

You can never fail to save on electricity if you shut off something that is not needed but beware the ambient temperature is seldom low enough for the long term storage of frozen food.
