Today the Republic of Georgia was invaded by Soviet troops, its capitol bombed by Soviet planes, and tanks and troops crossed the border in droves. The news stations in the US were covering the story in depth and broadcasting live from Georgia.
Then the National Inquirer - the US version of the Sun - hit the streets with a story of a continuing sexual liaison between a former presidential candidate, John Edwards and a good looking woman who worked for him at one time.
The real news stopped like it never happened and the salacious story took over all the broadcast time.
WHAT IS WRONG WITH HUMAN BEINGS IF THIS IS WHAT THEY WANT?
AND WHAT IS WRONG WITH THE "NEWS" STATIONS IF THEY GIVE IT TO THEM?

I've often wondered that myself.
The Russo-Georgian conflict is in top spot on The Times Online. The first story at The Sun online is about some **** being evicted from the Big Brother (reality TV) house.

The big bad world is a creul and nasty place, a lot of people prefer to ignore it and live in a little fantasy world of celebrities, glitz and glitter. One day it will come and bite them on the bum!

Jim,
I don't think it's us as such, more what the media want us to be interested in and what will sell papers and air space. What are the viewing figures for tripe such as BB? Not ass high as they would like I bet.

It's a chicken & egg situation. If the public didn't want it, the media wouldn't supply it. But if the media didn't supply it, the public wouldn't want it.

And the writing in newspapers has gone from 13-year-old's level to a 8-year-old's level. Churns my stomach.

There is talk of afficially allowing bad spelling in schools & colleges on the grounds that it's a "variant". Lordy-mama!

The dumbing-down of the populace so the corporations can more easily rule. It is aNeal Stephenson book come to life. Neil didn't need to make too much of a stretch to create the societies in his books.
