Why does breathing in helium make one's voice sound diferent? [:)]
What you do speaks so loudly that I cannot hear what you say.
-
All waves have two attributes, frequency and wavelength. The product of the frequency and wavelength of a wave is its velocity.
Sound is created within the vocal tracts by creating resonant cavities that are a particular fraction of the wavelength of the sound waves that are created.
Sound travels at different speed through different materials, and it travels faster through helium than it does through air (assuming the same pressure of gas).
Since the wavelength of the sound wave is determined by the vocal tracts, thus if the sound is travelling faster, then the related frequency of the sound of a specific wavelength will be higher, thus sound created within the mouth and vocal tracts when they are filled with helium will be of a higher frequency (assuming the same shape of mouth and vocal tracts) than if those mouth and vocal tracts were filled with air.

Thanks George

Also you can inhale other gases that make your voice much lower.

So then you could combine gasses to keep your voice the same. Em…. Well may be we should just stick to air it seems just right. [^][:p][^]

i wonder if you could make a wind instrument where you release various combinations of oxygen and helium as you blow only one note.

Hi Hadrian,
Don't mean to rain on your parade ...but just thought I'd post this link to the exact same question I asked a while ago ...hope that's Ok

Cripes just realised it was over two years ago !!..but you will find some definitive answers there.
Men are the same as women, just inside out !

Inhaling Helium can be dangerous:-
" However, when the lungs are filled with helium, a different process takes over. Oxygen is actually removed from the blood stream during the exchange of gases. Depending on how completely oxygen is replaced by helium, you may lose consciousness quickly and without warning—you may literally pass out while still standing. The usual result is an uncontrolled fall that can cause serious injury, even if normal breathing resumes before brain damage occurs due to lack of oxygen. "
