Title: Does shaving make hair go darker?
Post by: Rori Gray on 30/04/2011 12:01:01
Rori Gray  asked the Naked Scientists:

Hi,

Does shaving make hair grow back darker coloured? (It was already stated on a previous show that shaving doesn't make hair grow back any thicker).

Happy Easter!

What do you think?

No, I can't think of any mechanism. Hair does not have any living cells and there is no way to communicate any information back to the follicle that it has been cut. You could postulate that scraping the skin could have some effect but I don't believe that this is the case.
