If it's not in a war 'zone' then I'd say 'yes'.

I would get everything you expect confirmed in writing before you go - terribly difficult after the fact or whilst you are in Afghanistan.  It's good cash on the sound of it - but make sure you do you tax/NI/expenses calculations before you go or say yes.  At your age I would almost certainly have said yes - but think long and hard and break it to your family gently

I am with Matthew.. You should really think about it and definitely get it all in writing so they cannot slip out of their obligation.. which can sometimes happen and that would be terrible.

I'm just curious what the private market for Afgan interpreters is like.

I know that private engineers get paid an awful lot.

Does the army have statistics for the mortality rate for interpreters?  It is possible that some people in the country would see you as a traitor which could make it worse than other professions.

Omid, follow your heart!  Don't do something just because of the money....... Think about how you will change people through what you do and try to make it positive for everyone.  If by doing this you feel that you can improve the quality of life for humankind, including your own, then I say go for it.

I sincerely hope you can make a difference whatever you choose.
