Title: A BUG IN THE FORUM?
Post by: Roy P on 02/07/2006 22:14:32
Sorry to post this again, but it's getting a bit of a nuisance now:

When you click on the little arrow next to the name of the poster in the 'LAST POST' column it takes you straight to the last post.

However, if there is more than one page it does not work. For instance; in this forum, if you click on the 'ukmicky' arrow in the 'LAST POST' column of the 'Sticky: Error Log - Post Site Problems Here' 'Topic' column, it takes you to the top of the first page, instead of the bottom of the third page. (Does that make sense?)

Hi Roy,

I am sorry that this is still anoying you.

Hopefully , the new forum will be up and running soon and that this problem will be null and void...but..I must admit...I'm a tad confused ...do you mean this arrow as pointed to in this picture.. ?

AHH !!..NOW I understand....and YES...it's a damn nuisance isn't it ?

I must admit I never use it....I just click on Active Topics and it displays the most recent posts in all the forums...but I can see how irritating it is !

Lets hope the powers that be will resolve it ....we can't have you being peeved of by it ! [:)]

Fingers crossed eh ?

Roy..have you seen the new forum yet ? http://www.kellaton.org.uk/forum/index.php   soon we'll all be using that one instead !

Yep, I'll second Roy's irritation with this matter.

I too use the 'active topics' listing, but from there click on the arrow for the most recent post.  Fine for the single page topics, but no good for the multi-page topics, and you then have to manually navigate to the bottom of the last page.

Whooo, that's *very* smart, Neil! And, the arrows (referred to in the above posts) work, to boot :-)

I'm a little confused though. Is it actually 'alive' yet? I see you say all the messages will eventually be deleted, so is there any point in starting a thread or replying to posts?

When's the official launch date?

Roy...I'm totally uninvolved with the actual transfer...it will happen soon though.

When it does..all information from THIS site will be transferred to the new site..and all the info on there already will be replaced with this.

So, please feel free to visit there and have fun but know that anything you do there will eventually be replaced by the info here...so YES...please continue to post here.

have i confused you ?.....cos I am !!! lol

Neil asked:
>have i confused you ?

Nicely explained. Even *I* understood that :-)

However, being relatively new to these forums, I'm not too sure of the membership. Are you a moderator? Part of the forum set-up? Who else is part of the Naked Science people?

Hi Roy,

Yes I am a moderator (for my sins !)..but like the following list, my 'powers of moderation' are intrinsic to the posts of the site only....Dr Chris Smith is the big bad boss , he's the original Naked Scientist !!

list of mods that are active: daveshorts, NakedScientist, neilep, thedoc, ukmicky,

Daveshorts is currently working with Chris to sort out the transfer...lets hope it goes smoothly eh ?

Thanks for your support Roy...we love having you on board

ROY...I am blown away by your ART...I LOVE IT !!...is it for sale...?..I love the acrylics....I love the Purbeck Storm and the Mudeford Steps ...

Everybody..you must check Roys art...it's fanatsatic... !!...what a talent...a true artist !!

Hmm. There are more of you than I thought, Neil! Your efforts are most appreciated.

Well that was an unexpected shot of ego booster :-)

No, they're not for sale. You've picked *my* two favourites!!

The site is way out of date, along with my illustration and design style. It was constructed some ten years ago using raw html which I learned from a book, and optimized for dial-up connections -- hence the low quality gifs and jpegs, broken links, etc.

Yep I am the one organising the transfer. We want to move the forum over to a linux server (as I can cope with it a lot better and it means we can do more cool things). I am not sure when it will transfer over. We are sorting out a new main site, hopefully some of which will go liveish by the end of next week. I am then going on holiday for a couple of weeks (where holiday consists of a fortnight of CHaOS - www.chaosscience.org.uk ), and then I will get back to it. The forum should definitely be converted by the end of August. It should let you upload photos, insert chemical structure diagrams, and hopefully even sketch diagrams (although that one may take a couple of extra weeks).

The breaking of the arrow link is strange and odd as we just copied everything over to a seemingly identical server, but if you can cope for a month with it the whole thing should be changing anyway, and I would rather not dig around the source of the snitz forum to find out why it is broken for a month of useage. Especially as it would involve getting involved in strange microsoft programming languages ;)

Roy - I agree with Neil.  Love your art.  Couldn't pick a favorite, but was drawn to After the Storm.
