I would ask you to define what you mean by 'fall in love'.

I would guess that in general the answer is probably yes - we are basically just animals, and there is no single thing that we can do that other animals cannot do (that is not to say that we are not different to other animals, it is only that it is the totality of what we are that is different, rather than a single behaviour that is different); but it is not really possible to give a more specific answer without being clear as to how you would describe falling in love in a way that you might be able to recognise it if a non-human animal were to do it.

My two dogs won't let the males in my house come near me.  If my husband or my son tries to hug or kiss me in front of the 2 male dogs they start attacking.

Strange question...but yes. Animals could feel affectionate and obliged to protect you, like my dog, Tuxedo. He's a big softy, but many times my brother's have punched me and he growled at them. I'm his favorite. [;D]

Many times in literature an animal is affectionate toward a character. Maybe vicious guard dogs with snarling mouths and snapping teeth don't protect you out of "luff" but yeah, it's definetly possible.

My Daughters dog comes and stays with me in the afternoons when she goes to to work. He often jumps up on my bed and comes and lays on the other pillow next to my face... If I move or make a sound with the respirator on my face.. he quickly starts frantically licking my face around the mask and trying to wake me and get the mask off my face.. I think he thinks I am in distress or something but then he whines and I pet him but he puts his face on my face and his nose right against the respirator mask and goes to sleep on my face like that. He knows when I have problems breathing and he is in my face making sure everything is cool! LOL Sometimes after he tries to push the mask off he will lay there against my face sniff, then he will stand up and sniff at the air, blowing out of the top of my mask tube, on the vent part.. You know like when a dog hangs his head out a window in a car and laps at the air!It is very funny. He won't move till I get up and start moving around then he stays at my feet as if he is trying to keep me standing up.. He is a funny dog.

I fell down in the hallway after getting up to fast and he came and licked at me and put his paws over my chest and just sat there. then he moved off and laid next to me until I was able to get up. It was so weird but I distinctly get the impression he knows I am sick... It is so weird!

How can you get the animal not to "love you" anymore?

Can't do much like you can do with a young lady to make her not love you no more..So how??
Title: Could an different animal, other then a human, "fall in love" with you?
Post by: Karen W. on 15/01/2008 22:09:52
Well for starters I don't want the dog to stop loving me.. cause I love him too! I don't know about young ladies, LOL As That would have to be your department! I suspect you shouldn't say I love you in the 1rst place unless you really and truly do!! Then that kind of love never dies or goes away.

Same with a pet if you truly love the pet. Faults and all.

If you accept that 'love' is merely an all encompassing human concept, that covers all those feelings that we mentally complex humans allow to take over our brains. Then, no.
Domestic or companion animals live with us for very different reasons. Mostly because they are captive in our world. The blunt way to describe it, is that we bring them into situations where their natural characteristics mean that they come to depend on us.
Dogs need to belong to a pack, so you, or your family become just that. And your feeding and instructing a dog, makes it feel comfortable, and happy to fit in.
Cats are actually very social animals when they need to be, and most learn very quickly how to make us feed and shelter them.

But having said all that, I love my animals, and in their own ways, (as natural as I can allow them to be) they sort of love me.  [:I]

Not at all weird Karen. What a lovely dog he is. Dogs are well known for this kind of supportive behaviour, and it really is a natural thing in them. Although he can't understand exactly how to help you, he will do his best to 'defend' you against whatever it is that affecting you as a 'pack' member. He's just a sweet normal dog!

How come some of my rabbits "love me" and other ones want to kill me?

Cause there are some rabbits that are just not right in the head:
For example my rabbit Butterfly (2 yr old Broken colored Mini Lop):
-She's bisexual (really she is !!!)
-Attacked my Rhode Island Red rooster
- Attacked my head!!!
