Title: Is hydrogen a good coolant?
Post by: erickejah on 13/03/2009 14:34:41
What characteristics Hydrogen has over other elements that makes it the best coolant?

I didn't think H2 would be a good coolant, especially since it can be combusted fairly easily.

But for the sake of discussion, it may have something to do with how it is quite close to an ideal gas.

Do you mean in turbo generators?
It's because of low density, high specific heat, and high thermal conductivity:

Bcz it is lighter then air

Because it is lighter than air? What? How?
Since when has that ever been the reason? [???]

catch a ballon  filled with H you will understand

Well, since I don't have a hydrogen balloon on hand, could you please tell me what happens that will make me understand that a gas lighter than air is a good coolant?

Go on, what is the answer?

Hmm seee Hydrogen and deuterium are colorless, odorless gases and hence not easily detected by human senses. Hydrogen air mixtures are flammable over a large range of relative concentrations: from 4 \%  to 75  \%  H2   by volume. Detonation of explosions can occur with very low energy input, less than fraction 1by 10 that required by mixtures of air and gasoline. At temperatures above -250 C hydrogen gas is lighter than (STP) air and hence will rise. At atmospheric pressure the ignition temperature is approximately 1000 degrees F but mixtures at pressures of 0.2 to 0.5 Atm can be ignited at temperatures as low as 650 degrees F. Hydrogen mixtures burn with a colorless flam..

I think now you got it!!!

Uhhhh....

No.

------
I don't see how catching a hydrogen balloon is supposed to make me understand that hydrogen is not a good coolant (which I presume is what you are trying to say). [:)]
