Dear Coffee Luffers,

Here, enjoy this coffee.....hmmm..it's a thing if beauty isn't it ?

I've been told that if I put a spoon in it, (or even make it with the spoon already in)...then the spoon will make the coffee cool a lot quicker !!

Why's that then ?

Guess I better drink it before it gets cold !!....

I think the metal spoon would act like wick drawing the heat into the metal as a conductor and then allowing it to cool off faster as the unexposed end of the spoon would be cooling it down with the room temperature air. Like a cooler, in comparison to the hot coffee,At least thats my guess!

I'm with Bored Chemist on this. I don't think it will make a huge difference. If you put a fairly heavy spoon in there, then that will absorb some heat initially until it reaches thermal equibrium. I doubt the rest of the spoon will have much of a wicking effect - compare the area of the exposed spoonhandle to the exposed top-surface of the coffee (and the cup/mug).
While you stir the drink then it should cool down quicker as you keep mixing/bringing the hottest liquid to the periphery (without stirring you'll get a more gradual thermal gradient which will reduce the rate of cooling).

I'd go for the 'stirring' explanation. Evaporation on the surface is probably going to remove more heat than a bit of convection around the spoon handle - keeping the surface as warm as possible, by stirring, will produce more evaporation over the whole surface.

That was my first guess as well! The temperature is probably transferred in the metal of the spoon.

New question to me is: When will it stop? Or is it a continuing process?
