Title: What does the hairy ball theorum tell us
Post by: jeffreyH on 14/02/2014 03:35:25
No sniggering at the back.

See here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hairy_ball_theorem

And here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Hairy_ball_one_pole_animated.gif

Can this be related to electromagnetism or gravity in any way. This is a monopole but a dipole version may be applicable to the generation of electromagnetic fields.

Now this is interesting.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hairy_ball_theorem
"From a more advanced point of view: every zero of a vector field has a (non-zero) "index", and it can be shown that the sum of all of the indices at all of the zeros must be two."

Now we have the 2GM in various calculations for gravity where the 2 is important and is due to feedback. Are these in any way related? I don't know how they can be. Just asking for opinions.
