Microsoft's native password reset disk works .... https://www.thewindowsclub.com/create-password-reset-disk-windows

Third-party password-cracking software is another matter ...

On a slightly different track:
I once recovered a Windows computer that had been invaded by an encrypting virus.

I created a LINUX boot disk with antivirus software, then told the Windows computer to boot off the LINUX disk.
I ran the antivirus software, then was able to safely boot up the Windows computer.

Passcape works OK , the free version only displays the first three characters which may be enough to jog your memory if not you will have to get the full version.

Evan Au

I too find memory resident Linux useful it will often help you delete annoying bits of rubbish that you cant delete any other way

That sounds great, but my password reset disk doesn't work on my computer.
Maybe I need a new one
