How a clay pot reduces temperature of warm water ? What is the magic of pot ?

In India we store water in clay pot. every day I drink water from a pot. it's really cool.
we pore worm water in a pot during summer and winter . but during summer we get worm water so we store it in a pot. so that it cools it.
we still use pots cos its natural cooling system. we don't even use modern cooling freezers to reduce temperature of water.
How a clay pot act like a cooling system ?
can any one explain ?
some say it also removes bacteria .. it it true ?

The clay pot is colder than the water, and so heat goes from the water to the pot, reducing the temperature of the water and increasing the temperature of the pot. This continues until the clay pot and the water are at the same temperature.

I do not know if it removes bacteria, but i would doubt it.

I assume that the pot is not glazed on either the inside or outside?
If so I would guess that the cooling is down to the evaporation of water from the walls of the pot.

Nice try !!
But, volume of pot is less compared to volume of water .
how would you explain that ?
temp of water is more compared to pot . in fact pot gets wormed up .
but something is going on ???
like continuous process .. like freezer

I agree with Mazurka's answer.
