Title: I have developed vertigo can someone please help?
Post by: Airthumbs on 06/01/2011 03:22:54
I was an avid climber, rock climbing & tree's.  I have scoliosis and as a result of this, an oversized back muscle on the left side of my back.  This over developed muscle runs up my neck too.  I have hypertension but have been told this is not what causes the vertigo.
I totally spin out when I look up and also sometimes when I roll over in the night.  When I get up in the morning and sit up from bed I have to wait for the spinning feeling to stop.  If I am high up and look down this also happens and subsequently over the past two years have developed a discomfort for heights.  It is not a nice feeling clinging onto the trunk of a tree 20 meters of the ground hoping my head will stop spinning and dangerous, I am roped up with a harness but mistakes can be made!  If I rub the muscle on the left side of my neck I also feel a little dizzy.

Last year a Dr told me this was a viral infection causing this but I don't believe him and he didn't run any tests.

Does anyone have an explanation for this and preferably a solution.

I'm not sure I'd encourage rock climbing while dizzy.

Read about "Benign Positional Vertigo", and the Canalith Repositioning Procedure (CRP) or Epley Maneuver.  Your doctor, or perhaps a good DO doctor should be able to help you with it.

Extreme cases can be treated with surgery as a last resort.

See:

Not all General Practitioners will be equally active to treat your case.  DO's are often trained for "manipulations".

Thanks CliffordK, I will try those exercises and post the results on here later on.............. this is really great I think it has worked!!  I can't tell you how thankful I am that the Epley has actually done something and it's so simple!!  [;D]
