Dearest Wonderpeeps,
I love cows !...big floppy ears, big floopy tongues, big floppy udders....big soppy eyes....If I could have a pet cow I would...I'd build it a Cow Kennel and play fetch and ' rollover ' with it and teach it to beg and do tricks.
I heard today that people put magnets in cow tummies ?...why is that ?...I heard it this morning about 6am in a daze on some farming program on the radio and I am quite sure I was alert enough to hear this accurately...but , as to the reason why ?..........well I did happen to miss that !!
Anybody got any ideas ?
Oh...if you don't know what a cow looks like here's a picture I took on my visit to a field once which had cows in it !!

i understand that they use cow magnets to remove any scrap metal that the cow may have eaten while grazing from theyre stomachs so they dont damage them selfs

THANK YOU Chris !...I was so overwhelmed by the response of people that today I bloody well rang a farm up and asked them !!...and they confirmed exactly what you have said...that it's to collect any metallic objects swallowed and to retain them in the tummy so that they don't go through the digestive tract. I never realised the iron content of grass was so high [:)]

As an ex-small scale farmer who's land has a right of way running by it, you'd be amazed at what we used to find in cows stomachs.
What really used to 'get-my-goat'[:D] was people who would fill up their pooper-scooper bags and then not wanting to carry it home, throw them into my fields - cows are very curious and eat everything!!!
The idea of the magnet was to keep metal, (but not aluminium ring-pulls or drink cans[:(] ), in the first stomach. I never used them, my cows seemed to specialise in bits of string, aluminium drink cans, rubber balls, McDonalds boxes, sweet wrappers - and the aforementioned pre-wrapped dog-sh*t - non of which are magnetic.

and when you have sussed your cow has eaten something detrimental to her health,you have to work out which of her four bloody stomachs its in,and dont be around if she pukes,again four times the volume,and where they got all these bacteria doing the digesting,wind,not just a little parp,oh no,this goes on for ages,and if they get the runs,no wonder farmers keep them in fields, i wouldnt let one in the house.

Ray...I tried keeping a cow in the house once(sometimes I think I still do [:D]...hee hee hee ....OUCH !!!)...anyway, you're wise to not allow one in your dwelling........Our one used to open all the post before we got to it, always messed up the shower curtain during bath time, and would never close the door when ' powdering her nose '.

what really got on my nerves was the mid-nite munchies,she would have a heard of her mates round,you cant say anything (know what bulls are like,one word and they see red )but i would go to the fridge to get a salad and guess what,all gone,they cost me a fortune in veg.
as for these morons that drop rubbish on farm land,farmers should be allowed to shoot them like sheep worrying dogs are.[:p]

my brother is a farmer,when they had cows,(E U) made them unprofitable,they used to walk the fields with a magnet on a broom handle,picking up nails and such.i always thought it was to stop them getting in their hooves.
