Chemistry / What is Sodium Nitrite?? Also what is used for ??

I wonder if you can help me sort out this question please that's been
bothering me for a while now.

Recently I bought a quiche with bacon, eggs, pastry but also with
Sodium Nitrite. It seems a bit odd to have a chemical in any food,
I think.

What is this chemical and is harmful to humans?

If so what kind of reaction might they have?

I have heard the news today about Iceland's glacier erupting with volcanic
ash all over Iceland and other Northern European countries including Ireland,
England, Scotland, Wales also Norway, Sweden also Finland's airspace have
all been closed possibly until Saturday or longer because the volcanic ash
is covering the upper air as far as I understand.

What I don't understand is just how can a freezing cold glacier erupt?

It seems totally impossible to my non-scientific mind.

Physiology & Medicine / My cat Marmalade has Feline Hyperthroidism !!, Can you help please?

My female cat Marmalade is almost 11 years old and she has a condition called
Feline Hyperthyroidism which made/makes her over-eat and lose weight also
drank/drinks too much.

But since last October 2009 when I found about her thyroids being affected
she's been taking (eating) Vidalta 10mg x 1 daily (sort of).

She's also got possible kidney damage due to the meds but what
I don't understand is her condition or enough about Feline Hyperthyroidsim although
I ask loads of questions to the vet and I get rebuffed.

Geek Speak / What is the Internet Explorer 8 - Browser Like??

I have just done a Windows AV update scan and it asked me if I want to install the IE 8 browser.

I do not know anything about it, such as is it a faster, saver browser than IE7
which I am using now as well as GoogleChrome, that's too slow for me whereas
I find IE faster upload or downlaoding.

Also does IE8 look clearer and tidier than IE7 does now?

Geek Speak / Can I put my digital photos onto a memory stick? ?

I have been uploading my photos from my digital camera since I bought it in August 2007 but I've not thought
of having them made into proper photos yet.

But I know how to use USB memory sticks as I own 3 so far. I will probably buy more from Amazon soonish.

I have been wondering if it's possible to put the photos onto a USB memory stick?

The only memory card that I have is for 80 photos and if it's taken out then I can't use my camera.

The camera's a Sony CyberShot.

Where are the main earthquake faults in Italy like the cause/reason for the
most reason one that started yesterday 6th April 09.

After all it's not the first quake in that South European country, last one
was in Assissi I think about 12 years ago.

Like there is one somewhere that will cause
the Mount Vesuvius to explode again one day and all of Naples will die then.

The Environment / Why are the ladybirds in the edges/cracks of my windows in the winter???

Every winter, I have noticed the ladybirds with the red background and black spots
in the cracks of the windows also sometimes on the curtains/rails and even the corners of the ceilings.

Why does this happen because the frames of the said windows are metallic??

Is it a reason for the ladybirds to nest in my windows and the rest of the home??

Technology / New Epson Printers, Advice please???

I want to buy a new Epson Printer which is compatable with my XP PC and the Epson Scanner but my
present Epson Printer died on me this morning after 9 years of constant usage.

I have/had an Epson Color Stylus 460 printer and it's a chunky one. I'd prefer now a smaller sized printer.

Laser one if possible only I don't understand technical words/jargon.

Also where could I purchase a new Epson printer from also what are the best prices now?

Chemistry / What is the difference between "Mastik" and Putty?

What is the difference between Mastik (sp) and Putty?

I am asking because at the weekend, the plumber will be coming to fix the leak in my toilet floor, which has loads of newspaper there now.

The previous plumber had put Putty instead of Mastik in the hole.

General Science / Do cats ever suffer from Arthritis?

I have been wondering and worrying if middle-aged or elderly cats could ever get Arthritis and of course not the kind that a human would suffer from.

As my female cat, who's 10 (cat years 50) had 2 ops on her front left leg last autumn and recently she's been limping a bit in the morning.

She's a bit more aggressive and grumpier than her normal loving nature.

So if felines do ever get this disease Arthritis what do you know about?
I am baffled that's why I am asking The Naked Scientists for advice.

Geek Speak / Serious Word File Problems. What do I do?, it's my genealogical researches

One of my main Word Family Tree files goes in to a hyperlink underline red font but I have it set as

Times New Roman - Black - Regular and size 12 unless it's a saved appropriate site.

I don't want to spend the rest of my researching life correcting this problem. I'll try to show you what it is.

Otherwise I'll have to re-type all of the 90 pages, I'd get bored and possibly give up the lot. I don't want too of course.

This is what it looks like: Untidy
Example; "5th Generation - 2 daughters"
with a line right through every new piece of my typing/writing.


What can I do to correct this as I've been doing it for about 12 months now

Geek Speak / Can I send a picture from the internet to my mobile phone?

I am considering finding an appropriately Seasonal picture to try to send to
someone tomorrow, but I have sent photos that I've taken with my camera mobile phone
loads of times previously.

Only I don't know if it's possible to kind of email or something to my mobile phone,
btw it's an 02/Nokia 1.3 megapixel and I've had since July 07.

Geek Speak / What is the "Dashboard Module"? as my Windows AV is blocking it !

I have a Windows XP Desktop computer and when I turned the computer on this
Tuesday evening the Windows Firewall AV, blocked the "Dashboard Module"
made by Yahoo Inc.

What is it also should I unblock it or not?

I can't find it on Google other than forums and sites saying that Dashboard
Module is being "retired" in 2003/4.

I have seen it today when I twice ran my Windows Firewall
AV scan as it said that it had something to do with the site.

Also it comes up with the Anti-Spyware that I use as well.
Is it some sort of virus?

Just Chat! / YUM !!! It is NATIONAL BAKING WEEK 2008, this week, YUMMY

It is the first ever National Baking Week 2008, this week, so later on
this week, I bake just for myself some scones and a few other favourite treats

EG: Cheese Straws (Cheese biccies)

They are simple but messy to do, so here is my own recipe!!!!!!!

(You can either use a food mixer or your hands to make this mixture!)

Temperature: Gas 8

2 Teaspoons Baking Powder
2oz/50 grams Plain Flour
Pinch of Salt (optional)
Small pinch of Cayenne Pepper or Paprika
1 Teaspoon Dry Mustard Powder
2oz/50 grams Margarine or Butter,
3oz/75 grams Grated Strong Cheese
1 Egg Yolk

Sift the flour and the seasonings together, then rub in the fat,
Add the grated cheese,

Mix to a stiff dough with the separated egg yolk with cold water if needed.
Roll out thinly on a floured board, then cut either into narrow strips or with a round biscuit cutter.

Put onto a pre-greased baking sheet and cook in a hot oven for about 10-12 minutes,
{Note: Do take care not to let them burn.}

Leave to cool on a wire cooling tray then put in an airtight tin or eat.
