I hate it so much when we bite our tongues by accident when we eat! Is there any reason for this? Because we are so hungry? Also not just our tongues, but the sides of my mouth! Or is it just me?
-
Isth noth juths you...oucth!
-
Haha lol, any reason why though?
-
I hate this too...very much...especially when ewe do it again so soon after and it hits the same spot .
It is a well known fact that ' tongues' and the ' insides of cheeks ' have sado-masochistic tendencies.
They will purposely jump between your teeth to receive painful bitey joy and also impart agonising tear wrenching joy to you too.
This is the reason behind the growing industry of oral boot camps such as www.tonguesincheek.com and www.oraltraining.co.uk where you can drop your tongues and cheeks off for an hour whilst they undergo a regime of tough training and behavioral correction..
Yes..this is true !
-
Omg Neil.. I actually believed you and clicked on the links... LOL
And yep, I know when you hit the same spot again, in only a couple of hours or so.
-
Does anyone have any reasons why we bite our tongues and inner-cheeks? Is it just simply because it got in our way, when biting?

Seriously...I think you've got it there Seany chum....I think it's a matter of things just getting in the way...I would say it happens more when you're eating fast but I have bitten myself when chewing slowly too !...it's a co-ordination thing happening !...however..if there is a proper answer I am sure it will come.
.....
-
Hmm. At the moment, I'm just beginning to think the same way as you. I've bitten myself by chewing gum, slowly, quickly..
I just don't get it.. I mean, how hard is it to avoid biting your OWN tongue?
-

Well, we're rather accomplished at it really when ewe consider how often we chew !..and biting our tongues and cheek is quite rare really don't ya think ?

No.. I bite it about once 2 weeks or so. Bit the inner-cheek today.. REALLY badly, looked in the mirror, I see a dark red hole and white stuff. Eww.
And Neil, where do you live? Because its 12:39 in England, so I hope you don't go soon! Because then I'll be bored on my own.. That's what I don't like about this site. Its active sometimes, inactive at others.. [:(]

Yes, he is rather good at it, but he works very hard. He goes to class 4 days a week for 2 hours and then practices at home as well.
This is a photo of Nic with his Sensei. This was taken at his first tournament where he came in 2nd place in sparring.

Wow. Big trophy. Wouldn't wanna mess with him, huh? [:P]
Nice meetin ya Carolyn! Its 2:21am here and my tiny eyes are shutting down! Hope to see ya tomorrow!
-
Don't often bite my tongue, but it does happen sometimes (usually when I am tired, and my coordination is impaired).
The trouble is, as you say, when you have bitten your tongue, because it is damaged, so it gets slower getting out of the way when it should, so you are more likely to bite it again, until it gets healed, and back to its usual coordination.
-
Oh.. I hate it when it doesn't stop bleedin for ages. And if you bite your bread, there's a red mark on it.. [:o]
-
GRRRRRRRRRR.. I bit my tongue once again today! [:-'(]
Is it simply the mere fact that the tongue gets in the way?
-
I am sure it is just in the way !!....have you noticed if your tongue is becoming floppy like a big floppy doggies tongue though ?
-
Hmm, no I haven't noticed symptoms of it yet. Why do you ask? [:o] LOL
-
I just thought ewe were beginning to wonder if there was more to than just your tongue getting in the way...like ..that your tongue might be broke....a broke tongue .. [;D]
-
LoL.. I'm pretty sure it isn't.. Broke.. I'll let you know on that after I see myself on the mirror..
*Looks at mirror*.
Oh sugar..
-
LOL !!..I am sure your tongue is not broke !!...But perhaps being so conscious about biting it is in fact instrumental in you biting it more....comprendez ?
-
Non, je ne comprends pas. Merde. [;D]
-
LOL....I know french well enuff to recognise a norty word !!....
-
*Cough*. Why?! My french teacher say the word "Merde" all the time! I caught it from her. Why, what does it mean? I mean, I'm not the type of person to go round looking in a French to English dictionary and looking for what $h** is in French..
-
DOH!!
-
DOH!!

Methinks ewe have taken this forum by the ruff of it's neck and shaken it up somewhat !!
-
Y'what? [:P]
-
Y'what? [:P]
What I mean is that any attempted domination by a sheep is swamped by the ubiquity of ewe !!....
-
Yes.. I was never that fond of sheep. [:D] Are you? *Looks closely*
-
Yes.. I was never that fond of sheep. [:D] Are you? *Looks closely*
LOL...to be honest...I just luffed the picture when I discovered it many years ago !!

-
I will be good [^]
-
Hey Neil, I'm gunna go to sleep now, as you won't be back for a while! Ta~
-
Night chummy !!....sleep well !!
-
Hey You guys sometimes eating too fast is the culprit but not always as you said neil, but usually the repeated offence in the same spot is due to incredible swelling once you bit it the first time. You are used to keeping your teeth in a certain chewing pattern which is also determined by the way your teeth are aligned ane growing, you automataticly chew with the same kind of mental blueprint so to speak. So you can be really cautious for a few moments, but as soon as you relax and chew normal, wham in goes that puffed up cheek into the line afire!! just like that swelling is the key usually after first encounter with cheek biting JOY!LOL...OUCHY
-
Thanks Karen [:o]
-
The only good thing about biting your inner cheek is sucking on the blood bubbles !!
-
OHHHHH that is gross NEILY..LOL YUCKKKKKKY! LOL
-
It swells like hell.. And if you look on the mirror, theres a massive red bump on it! [:(]
-
Blood bubbles are usually reserved for inner cheeks !!...well...they are with me anyway...it's like a small (well it is)a jet back looking (because of the darkness of the blood and the fact there's no light fittings in ya gob !!) bubble !!
hmmm...so many parenthesis almost makes the top line illegible !!...
-
BOY OH BOY You are on the border Kind sir..LOL That is nasty Sir... Yoou are so funny!!! YUCKKY!
-
It swells like hell.. And if you look on the mirror, theres a massive red bump on it! [:(]
Yes I told you it swells rally bad. Your inner cheeck is a terribbly easy place to get an infection rinse with some salt water.. it stings but try to keep your mouth clean until it heals..My Neice was attacked by a large dog who ripped her face up and the doctor said that the inside of your mouth was really full of germs as we all know,... but that risk of serious infection can happen quickly in your mouth and the travel time from the mouth to the brain for an infection is very rapid so don't take it likely, a tooth infection not treated can kill ya . It travels very fast!
-
mouthwash too! Kills bacteria..
-
That is real good advice Kareny Mam....
This is awful about your niece.....how is she doing ?
-
SHe is fine this happened many years ago now when my daughter was about 5 I would say..LOL 20 years ago.. She still carries a huge scar on her face, but they took extreme caution with it no sun exposure at all used total sun block to aid in the healing..which was good. The scar is not as bad as It was when she was small, but it is about two inches across on herleft cheeck and she has never had cosmetic surgery to repair it. She is a beautiful young girl!
Two of my three children have been attacked by vicious dogs, I love dogs but also have a healty respect for a dog, especially one in a pen or on a chain.. I have seen that that can make them less social and become mean. Dogs are great but you must be kiind to them and treat them well and never reach over a strange dogs head to pat its head as dogs take this as an agresssive move when your hand goes over their head, especially if iiyou aer a stranger to them. Keep your hand low and your body in a non agressive stature.hands down unless you are protecting yourself from attack!.. My daughter was riped up along her kidney area her lower calve and arms upper and lower. My youngest son put his arms up to protect his face also and had his arm ripped up and had the artery severed in hisright upper arm.. I elevated it and put a 2 quick turniquttes in place as he was spewing.. THen petal to the metal to the hospital where they removed them and fixed his arm.. he had lost quite a bit of blood when I found him at his friends he was about 10 years old or so.. I his friend was in shock baging on neighbors door to get someone to help them. nobody came to help, because they thought it was some kind of joke.. Nathan was holding his armsqueezing it trying to stop the bleedin but was very pail his friend was sweating and white as a ghost scared to death about his dog bitiing Nate.. and just plain scared for Nate .. I don't know why or how I just went to pick him up because I thiought he had had enough time to visit that day so it was pure chance I had drove up when I did.. I saw the panic and the blood , when he moved his hand the blood went evrywhere and his arm had a huge gaping whole in it and I could see the muscle had been ripped at also.. He ended up with lots of stiches and hours at the hospital on the wacky meds and lots of uncomfrotable scrubbing of the wound.. It was a nightmare but I made it until the hospital before I hyperventlated... thank God as I was aweful.. I felt that freezing coming on when I seen him but it held untill the hospital.. So weird.. sorry I am rambling..

There is an old traditional way of putting honey on that place. Works like a charm! [;D]
-
Karen, that is a sad story! I always touch dogs from the top to pat them.. But now I know I shouldnt. So what is the best way to approach a stranger's dog, if you want to pat them?
-
My children all healed and still have a huge love and respect for dogs as I do!!
You are supposed to hold your hand low below there chin not under until they sniff you and are at ease and sure you mean no harm.. try not to be nervous! You know as if you were going to feed them. Then allow them to smell you and then you then rub them under there chin if they like that.. then move down their side and to their head scratching ears etc.. don't move on if dog seems apprehensive...and don't move hand from underchin straight over head , scars them and is agressive. This is not true of everydog some are just happy go lucky, but the problem with that is you never know which one was ill treated or will react in such a manner you could get hurt!
-
Thanks Karen, I'll try that next time. I am actually quite scared of dogs, although I love them. I can tell which are friendly, which are not, so I try to avoid the fierce ones. But if I stick my hand below, I'm afraid they might just bite meh hand off! [:o]

Kareny is right.....I always offer the palm of my hand below their jaw line so that they can see .
Thanks for sharing your post above kareny mam...big hugs and shmishes for ewe !!

Kareny mam.. Since when did that start out? [:P]

Just keep your hand low not moving toward them until they smell you and are contrent next to you. then offer your hand slowly with a calm voice say come here girl or boy .. Oh you are a pretty dog..offer your hand if he isn't interested don't reach out. just be still act normal.. be calm.. This is ll different if you are being attacked or growled at.. don't make any attempt to pet.. and watch every move you make including retreating a scared dog will bite very quickly becase they are scared, not necessarily because they are vicious!

I will try it the next time I chomp the side of my cheek! Thanks for the advice!

Yup, also it's good for ulcers, especially near the gum under your teeth. [;)]
-
Wow That is interesting Seany!
-
Heehee. Next time you get an ulcer. Shove some honey there. [;)]
-
I have never had mouth ulcers.. My husband had them alot though!
-
Oh.. They are sooooo painful, you can't eat sometimes! Heehee, next time if your hubby gets an ulcer, make him put some honey there. You can still just lick the honey off, because some amounts of it go through, but just repeat it a few times. It tastes nice anyway [;D]
-
well i always bite my tongue when i am not concentrating and rather watching TV than eating. also about this ulcer discussion, this hurts, but i put salt on my ulcers then they leave in the next couple of days if u put a pinch on a day. do it over a sink though, people tend to drool alot
-
Hey, thanks Gutted for that. I'll try the salt next time, though it sounds.. More painful than my honey one [;D] because I think that it would hurt like hot water in a shower, when you have a cut on your knee or something

I dawn't have one. So you can tell me [;)]

So why when I have had an epileptic seizure that I have bitten my tongue during the
seizure something which often has amazed me, is that my tongue or cheek if bitten too,
heals within 48 hours due to the antiseptic effect of saliva.
Or so I have been told. [:P]
