Title: Why does constipation cause stomach ache?
Post by: malikapink on 02/03/2009 16:30:02
malikapink asked the Naked Scientists:

Why does one get a stomach ache and feel generally  ill when constipated?

Thanks!

I love your show (http://www.thenakedscientists.com/HTML/podcasts/) and fall asleep to it almost every night.   All the knowledge soaks right into my unconscious brain.   :)

I am n Doctor..buy feel it safe to say what goes in must come out eh?

When you become constipated your  stools have lost  moisture lack fluids and fiber to make them move... the bowl area becomes basically empacted because of the build up of waste inside your body.... When this happens it makes us uncomfortable to say the least..but at some point I believe it becomes toxic to our bodies because it has to go somewhere so Out would be best... I would worry that no elimination may cause absorbtion of the waste into your body etc..Probably causing the generally ill feeling that is compounded by the distended impacted bowel build up, even into the intestine I would think! Maybe a  qualified person will explain better then I and correct anything I may be wrong on....
