Chemistry / Canola Oil? No thank you.
« on: 25/11/2008 00:15:55 »
When my husband started buying Canola oil I thought he was buying something safe for us.  Unfortunately, a few months later I found out he was feeding us with some rare kind of poison.  Canola oil is produce in Canada from rapeseed.  It is said to be poisonous to human consumption. I am very concern with trans fat and all other man-made ingredients.  Canola oil is the cheapest cooking oil in the market and unfortunately, available only to the poorest people.  Please don't buy this product.  Best choices is Olive Oil 100% pure, extra virgin.

« on: 12/09/2008 22:43:18 »
I would like to know how much damage can drinking beer cause to my brain's Neurons.  Is it true that alcohol kills unreplaceable Neurons?
Also, if humans in a lifetime only uses 10% of their brain, can they use more of that by studying?

General Science / Is it true that only one atom will convert margarine into plastic?
« on: 17/08/2008 01:54:32 »
I heard that the formula for margarine is one atom away of being converted to plastic.
I've also heard that if left outside for a week margarine will not be disturbed by insects, not
even flies. Is this true or fiction?

Just Chat! / Is it too late for me?
« on: 02/08/2008 15:40:58 »
Hello, let me introduce myself, my name is Marianne though some call me Miriam.  I'm almost 48 years old and my problem is that i want to become a chemist, yet I feel I am too old for that.  I spent my life working as a secretary and raising 5 children.  I have an AA in general studies.  One of my obstacles has been following my husband around the world.  He's a soldier.  Now he is ready to retire, and we have settle in Texas.  Now I feel cheated.  Because now he has done what he had to do yet I am faced with being ashame of attending chemistry classes with younger people.  I consider this site full of intelligent people and would like their opinion on the matter.  Would I be wasting my time studying chemistry because of my age?  Should I be embarrassed to go to school? or should I change my degree path?  Maybe environmental studies?
Thank you for your replies.

Marianne
