we started of with 2 pots 1 of them was filed with muddy water the other was left empty.

then we got 1 strip of white cloth and put 1 end in each cup then left it over night. when i got up this morning in the empty pot was nice clean water and the bit of cloth what was in the muddy water turnd dirty.

why did this happen ? [?]

Two demonstrations in one experiment :
- as the cloth absorbs water and gets thoroughly saturated with it, it starts to act as a siphon (as long as you keep the surface above the muddy water higher than the surface of the water in the other beaker
- the fibres of the cloth function as a filter
The second picture shows that you already have decantation in the mud filled beaker (you have a clear supernatant). Granule size in your mud is probably on the high side.
