Matthew Burnett asked the Naked Scientists:

Hello Naked Scientists!

Would you be able to explain what binary fission is? I came across this term on the virology section and thought you might be able to explain briefly what this means!

Thank you!

What do you think?

Fission describes the act of a single item splitting into multiple items.  Binary just means two.  So binary fission is the term used to describe the act of a single item splitting into two separate items.
