Title: Is it possible to trigger cerebral activity?
Post by: TuongThuc on 15/09/2020 02:26:14
The mind is never silent; even when you are sleep 15% of your cardiac output is being directed straight into your head where the 100 billion nerve cells (an 1 trillion other supporting cells) consume one fifth of the oxygen you require to remain alive every minute.

These cells are in an electrochemical equilibrium: a state of continuous neurological chatter that forms a baseline level of activity onto which experiences can be superimposed, rehearsed and learned.

As one neuroscientist put it to me when i first began to make radio programmes "the brain you go to bed with tonight will not be the same one you woke up with this morning!"

Do you mean something similar to the film Lucy ?

The mind is a receiver and not much different than an antenna .

Where did you plagiarise this from? I said that on a programme! Those are my words quoted...

The mind is a receiver and not much different than an antenna .
At the sensory level, I can see that the mind receives sensory inputs from the body, and replays these in a modified form during dreaming or day-dreaming.

At the neuronal level, I can see that the dendrites of a neuron act as a receiver. They respond to neurotransmitters produced by the axons of an adjacent neuron.
See: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neuron

But it is a bit far-fetched to say that the mind is an antenna. The brain connections of every individual are subtly different, shaped by individual experiences.
- If the mind were able to receive coherent signals, every mind would interpret them differently
- But external signals can't easily activate neurons, due to the all-or-nothing activity of nerve cells.
- The action potential has a voltage pulse of about 0.1V across a membrane about 1 μm thick. To trigger this electrically, you would need to apply about 100,000 Volts per meter. This would have severe side-effects on the patient.
- Fortunately, there are gentler ways of activating neurons, via a localized magnetic field: Trans-Cranial Magnetic Stimulation
- When you do transmit to the brain in this way, you effectively disable a small section of the brain for a short period. The brain does not so much "receive" a signal, but is temporarily paralyzed by a gross overload.
