My video editing software says that making vlogs about your dog or cat are very popular and makes both the human and the animal happy celebrities. I was told once that celebrity cats and dogs are not aware they're celebrities, and therefore are incapable of being proud of it.

I've watched quite a few...very much similar...except for different owners & pets, the basic story n usual tricks remain the same.

Not possible. A celebrity is a person who has no actual relationship with you. It's a person whose function cannot be preceded with "my", as in queen, postman, tax inspector, best friend.....and thus has no importance in your life.  If you record an animal, even one that has no dependent relationship with you, it immediately becomes "my chosen gorilla" or whatever and is important at least to the extent that you chose to record it, you own the recording, and you can do something with it.

What I find particularly interesting is that dogs, at least, share human categories. The species nowadays has an exceptional range of forms, from chihuaua to Great Dane, bald to shaggy, white to black, as a result of human-directed selective breeding. The historic ancestor, as in wild dogs, was pretty uniform, but any modern dog recognises all other modern dogs as dogs and not cats (many are smaller than cats) or goats (same size, build and shagginess as a long-haired retriever) without being taught.

Preening is more often associated with cats, but no species would do it at all if they weren't aware of "self". Not sure how you define self consciousness but the fact that Sally and Lucy (a pair of retrievers who used to own me) responded to their own names and not each other's suggests a clear distinction between "me" and "other".

Ps - i observed this with the strays i feed, inorder to feed my own selfish goodness...

All i do is Whistle...& They know the candy man has arrived. No name-calling atall.
(Noo! No sweets, it's poison i know)

What i find Amusing is...now they Defend me against Other humans.
They let Other strays get close to me...but they are very Alert when another Human shows up.

In short, They think of me & treat me as a Stray!

To explain the above in the most simplistic manner...

Adopt a Cat & name it " Doggie "...
Or adopt a Dog & name it " Kitty "...
It Simply will make No Difference to Them.

Self awareness means ability to distinguish if something is part of itself or not.
My first cat was adopted as a kitten. When he saw his own reflection on a small mirror, he showed curiosity and seemed to treat his own reflection like another kitten by trying to play with it.

But when we use a larger mirror which can show him and me in the same frame, he seemed to quickly realized that the kitten shown in the mirror is his own reflection. He stopped playing with it since then. His offspring who got to interact with the large mirror in the first encounter seemed to quickly recognize their own reflections after seeing mine and their siblings there.
