New Theories / Re: Post Orgasmic Illness Syndrome (POIS)

Acronym, B12 helps my overall mental health but I don't think it has any effect on my sleep. I just happen to take it with my turmeric which I like to take before bed as it seems to help with sleep a little. But I definitely noticed an improvement of duration of sleep with dandelion.

Update: I had another NE a few weeks ago and had POIS symptoms again, to me I imagine it to be like a pressure increase somewhere in the body. Perhaps like if cerebrospinal fluid pressure is increased, or if something is swollen in the groin area putting pressure on a nerve. So my previously mentioned improvement from Elderberry is now dubious.

I should mention something that helps my sleep. I take turmeric capsules and B12 before bed each night and this seems to help my general mental health. But I have found that taking dandelion before bed will allow me to sleep longer through the night. Dandelion is a diuretic and it seems like reducing body water might lessen pressure somewhere in the body. I am now taking it in the morning and at night (about 1/2ml - about 15 -20 drops of tincture).

Why did you choose this combination? Isn't 5HTP for sleep and DHEA for heavy metal chelation?

Whether abstinence might have been a factor I don't know. It is possible I suppose but I rather doubt it.

I started with Sambucol Black Elderberry Syrup which is 1.83 grams of concentrate taken 4 times a day. After that I changed to a capusle supplement of 1g concentrate taken 4 times per day.

Update:
I have been abstinent for a long time but recently had an orgasm and did not have any POIS. Prior to this event I was taking some supplements, the most significant of which might have been Black Elderberry extract capusules. When I first started it I experienced sensations in the pubic region (under the skin), something akin to occasional vibrations. I don't know what was going on but I wondered if it might be the reaction of the Elderberry fighting a latent virus of some kind. It perhaps sounds odd but Elderberry is purported to be an anti-viral, among other things. So I stayed on it until the sensations went away and then went off it. Then a few weeks later I started it again prior to orgasm and then continued on it for a couple of weeks.  During this time I did not experience any of my prior POIS symptoms. I am considering the Elderberry to be the most likely cause of the positive results.

I will also mention the other supplements I have been on during this time in case they are significant: turmeric capsules and ALA (alpha lipoic acid).  The turmeric is taken for general health, and the ALA was being taken for potential benefits of chelating heavy metals from my system. This was because I did a heavy metals urine test last fall and was told I have statistically elevated levels of mercury and lead (relative to the general population) .

Chelators can be ordered through internet. I would really recommend to try out Cutler's protocol and see if there's any difference in how you feel on ALA, which would strongly suggest that mercury is an issue.

Can you give detail on this? How might one feel while taking the ALA if it is chelating mercury?

acronym, thanks for your thoughts. I think the nickel exposure was due to using pure nickel guitar strings. I'm guessing that the nickel powder got on my fingers which was then ingested by eating something like sunflower seeds or maybe by holding the guitar pick in my mouth. I am now being careful not to hold the pick this way and to wash my hands after playing. I also used to eat way lots of spinach which is high in nickel, maybe that contributed.

It occurs to me that if this idea pans out it might work for an entirely different reason. It may be that heating the skin enables a bacteria or virus to be killed similar to what happens when we get a cold or flu. If this is the case a sauna following sex might be best as it probably raises up the skin temperature more than simply working up a sweat would.

I had the chance to test my idea that simple sweating might assist in preventing POIS.  What I did was to eat a greasy supper (something I don't usually recommend) , then following orgasm I ensured that I sweated a lot. I did this by putting on layers with a nylon jacket to block air escaping and did a bunch of physical work for a while.  It is something you might feel a bit silly doing but I think it may be beneficial. I ate the greasy meal because I was trying to replicate a situation in the past when my health improved dramatically following sex ( Ate pizza, had sex, then slept in a car and woke up roasting hot in the summer morning).  The result this time was that I did not have any POIS as it would occur in the past. The only thing I had was that later in the week I seemed to have a heightened stress level.  I am thinking that maybe this method holds potential and I would be interested to know the results of anyone else trying it. My thinking is that following orgasm our bodies are struggling with something toxic that it simply wants to eliminate, and that sweating allows it to occur quickly. One potential toxin could be heavy metals that are stored in "sexual" areas of the brain or sex organs that are brought into circulation when that area is activated.  It may sound farfetched but I think it is worth investigation. If the greasy meal actually helped perhaps the saturated fat acted as a means of a carrier to be expelled by the skin. I prefer to stay chaste now but if I did it again I would put more focus on sweating even more the day of orgasm, and maybe even days following. A sauna would be another good means of forcing the body to sweat.

It is the point that make me think it may be a wrong way.

That sounds logical but I still am intrigued by the idea that sweating might have prevented my POIS that one particular time and eliminated my other symptoms. It might be a good test for someone to simply use a sauna post-sex to see if it reduces or eliminates POIS with the theory that it might allow the body to eliminate what is disturbing it.

Very interesing. Anyway my heavy metals test is negative. It's important to start chelation to clean these metals. And it's a big hope for your Pois and general health.

What type of analysis did you have done for heavy metals? Hair or urine ?

Here are my (out of range) results from a heavy metals urine test:
Unprovoked:
Mercury => High Normal
Nickel    => Very High
Lead     =>  Normal

Provoked:
Mercury => High
Nickel    => Very High
Lead     => High

Has anyone else here had this test done? I am seriously considering if POIS might be related to heavy metals. Perhaps at orgasm the body dumps a massave amount of stored heavy metals into circulation, causing our symptoms.  Maybe the foods that have helped POIS have done so by assisting in chelation. I personally have found reduction in symptoms from eating garlic, spinach, and blueberries. Garlic is definitely a chelator, maybe the others are somehow as well. There is one particular event in my life that stands out as possible evidence of this theory. One night after I had sex I ended up sleeping in a car on a hot summer night. In the morning it was roasting hot with the sun beaming on me. That day on waking my diplopia was gone and I had no POIS. So how could that be related to heavy metals? Well,  sweating is one of the ways that the body eliminates toxins. If this theory is correct it could be exactly what we all need to prevent the POIS symptoms, to sweat alot!

I am going to begin chelation before long. I will post if my diplopia or insomnia improves. I will not be able to analyze any POIS effects as I am chase , but I do recommend the sweating idea to anyone who is suffering with POIS.

Note to BJim: Taurine, which has helped you,  is often used in chelation. Just a thought.

What about the anti-POIS effect, has it diminished in effectiveness?
About the Pois symptoms, I can confirm it's still effective. After one year, I think placebo effect must be over.
I can give you a number :
My taurine level is 58 ùmol/L   (range   : 37  to  127), quite low after taking 500mg a day during 1 year.

For anxiety, it's hard to say. I'm clearly less anxious now but I don't think taurine will help anxiety. It helped my Pois which is my anxiety source, so it helped but not directly.

For PE, I had the feeling it helped during the first weeks. Now, it's less clear. I'm a severe case of PE, so I don't know. Taurine may have a real muscle relaxant effect and then it could help with PE.

Ok thanks, I was interested as I'm in the same boat of having a severe case of PE, it is good to hear of potential assistance.

Happy to read that, John !
I take it since one year now. I reject all possible placebo effect, it simply works against Pois.
I don't know how does it work. I just made a bloodtest this week and maybe I will have some info soon.
At the start I had a strong anti-anxiety effect, anti-muscle tremors and even... anti-premature ejaculation. Does taurine help with magnesium or boost testosterone or avoid dopamine drop after ejaculation ? But something is working that is clear.
Now, I take only 500mg before ejaculation. I have a very little fear that excess of taurine can affect testicles.

BJim, the other benefits that you have had with Taurine are very interesting: anti-anxiety, anti-PE, etc. So are you saying that these effects have diminished with subsequent Taurine use? By how much? What about the anti-POIS effect, has it diminished in effectiveness?

Every day before breakfast and lunch, 1x57g capsule of Taurine and magnesium 900mg with a bit of water (room temp),

Taurine is the KEY of my Pois. It makes a HUGE difference.
It's like if taurine is "pumped" after ejaclation to "regenerate" something (testosterone ? semen ?).

But you made a mistake in dose, 1x57g is not correct ;)

Interesting. I recently tried Taurine, I had an NE and using Fenugreek and Taurine I had no symptoms. I forget now why I even tried Taurine, but it could be a keeper.

Nightingale,
I'm curious, have you tried turmeric instead? Does curcumin have a different effect for you? It seems that it wouldn't as curcumin is a component of turmeric.

DM, it is possible to eliminate all sources of lust, but it takes commitment. I am a devout Catholic and adhere to it's instruction that avoiding all situations that lead to temptation will block temptation. I am living proof that a person can live (most of the time) without lust entering his mind, something unthinkable years ago. I don't watch many tv shows, very few movies (make sure they have no passion in them, and if they do I turn off the volume and avert my eyes) Sound crazy? It aint, it works! Online I am able to resist a search in the wrong direction that would spell certain disaster. I believe that worshiping God (obedience to His rules) gives me the ability to walk without falling. The only POIS that now afflicts me is very occasionally when I have an NE, otherwise I am a chase single person. I just wanted to let you know that there is hope from the maelstrom that of POIS.

As far as increasing dopamine, you can try consuming fava beans. I buy them dry and boil them, and include some with other beans for my evening protein most nights. Protein in general is very valuable to anyone with mental instability. I recommend a protein shake in the morning with breakfast, they contain lots of the amino acids used to build neurochemicals.
