Title: When tyres wear out, where does all the rubber go?
Post by: Debbie Watson on 18/07/2008 10:10:03
Debbie Watson asked the Naked Scientists:

My Dad in Flatpoint, New Zealand wants to know: when your tyres wear down, where does the rubber go?

Hope you can help. I'll be listening to Ask the Naked Scientists (http://www.thenakedscientists.com/HTML/podcasts/ask-tns/) if you have the answer.

Debbie.

What do you think?

Abraded off on to the road surface or burnt by friction. It is a good point that there must be a fair bit of rubber dust about because, except for certain places, you don't see the roads blackened by it. I guess most of it gets washed away via the drains.
