Title: If one condom is good, are two better?
Post by: Carolyn on 10/10/2008 01:46:48
*Mods - I wasn't sure where to put this, so please move it if it's in the wrong area.

Nic and I were having a discussion tonight about sex, condoms, & std's.  I (half) jokingly said to him that when the time was right and he decided he was 'ready' to always wear a condom, "in fact", I said "wear two of them".

Nic said he heard that wearing two condoms increased the chance of breakage.  I had never heard that before.  Is there any truth to it?

Q. Does using two condoms provide more protection than using just one condom?

A. No. Using two condoms, or "double bagging", does not double your protection against pregnancy and STIs. Condoms are designed to be used one at a time. The use of two condoms (two male condoms or a male condom with a female condom) is not an effective safety measure. During penetration, the condoms will rub against each other creating friction between them, making them likely to slip off or break.

Please bear that in mind.

Wouldn't a second condown have a strangling effect?

Frankly, I don't care if it strangles him or not.  I'm far too young to be a grandmother!

It is more important to use a spermicidal cream with your single condom. Then if any of the sperms do a Houdini style escape the cream will kill them. This is a better way of being doubly protected and no grandkids will be drawing on your walls just yet.
