Title: What is the best way to power artificial hearts?
Post by: Paul Anderson on 16/11/2008 10:36:40
Paul Anderson  asked the Naked Scientists:

Hi Chris and Team,
I am currently listening to Health Check from the BBC and they are talking about the new French artificial heart and the problem of battery life.

Using the principle of transformers, how about setting up ones bed so that when one lies in bed at night the power is transformed into you to charge your batteries?

On public transport, there could be seats for heart patients where they could sit and get charged up.

The question here is whether the electromagnetic fields might have adverse effects on the body.

Wireless (rf) connections to implanted devices, without breaking skin, are used in cochlear implants (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cochlear_implants#Transmitter), cardiac (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pacemaker) and brain pacemakers (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brain_pacemaker).

What if the bus was late ? ... [xx(]

I have a rechargeable toothbrush. It conjured up a novel picture in my mind. You'd have to have seen one to appreciate it - it could bring tears to the eyes.
