Title: Arms folded when walking - why?
Post by: moses lawn on 03/05/2005 19:40:51
Why do many many females, young and old, walk with their arms folded?

I have heard that it's something to do with controlling their 'wobbly bits', but I've seen lots of girls and women who have no 'wobbly bits' to speak of, walking in this way. Is it to keep themselves warm?

If so, Why is it that, on the whole, men and boys don't go around with their arms folded?

I agree, girlies should NOT walk about with their arms folded. How on earth are us blokes supposed to oggle their mounted foundations if they keep em covered like that ?

But seriously, I reckon it is to do with some instinctive protection to secure those precious assets from danger, or perhaps they're just cold !!....having said all that, I honestly haven't noticed girlies doing that, perhaps here in London girlies like to let them get fresh air !

Men are the same as women.... just inside out !!(https://www.thenakedscientists.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.world-of-smilies.com%2Fhtml%2Fimages%2Fsmilies%2Fmini%2Fmini018.gif&hash=43d4f680fb1e52aecb14b539cb9eba2c)

i always thought that arms folded was a defensive measure in terms of body language in both men and women...

Exodus you probably right... I think that men do it as well (usually 'flamboyant') but also 'normal' men do it too. However they probably do it just because it would be comfortable....? Maybe they don't find it particually comfortable just having their hands in their pockets or just dangling... also when their arms are folded it often emphisises the size of the 'wobbly bits' lolz

p.s hope I haven't offended anyone by using the words 'normal' and 'flamboyant' it was only a joke!

I have always been told that crossing your arms is a defensive form of display
to others. Even if it's as you say to protect our wobbly bits.

Indeed, I too have always heard it regarded as a defensive measure - but do people actually walk like that?  I can understand they might stand with their arms folded (particularly if they feel, or wish to be, somewhat isolated from the company they are in), or maybe a slow saunter with arms folded, but when walking properly, the arms are supposed to counterbalance the motion of the rest of the body (and if you have wide hips, and large wobbly bits, then it would seem even more important to use the arms as counterweights).

I have tried it for gaining proper body balance  it works, but it is not easy to walk a great distance that way.. You use muscles you did not know you had! You can feel it in the back and around the tummy and in the arms... after you do it a few times as a exercise.. It is great.. a friend recommended it for loosing that excess flap under my arms after loosing 116 lbs. It has been helpful.

And arms swing opposite of the legs moving, i.e. Left arm swings when you put your right foot forward and vice versa.

I thought it was interesting as I had never paid any attention to what arm swings in comparison to my steps.. I think its cool.. Is it true of everyone , or are left handers different in the coordination of their arm swings???
