Title: Do oysters feel pain?
Post by: Rodney on 26/02/2009 15:30:01
Rodney asked the Naked Scientists:

G'day Chris,

I listen to the naked scientist podcast (http://www.thenakedscientists.com/HTML/podcasts/) and really enjoy it.

You may have been asked this question before. Do oysters feel pain?

Regards,

Rodney

What do you think?

Since Oysters have a nervous system, I should think the answer is yes.

But does it necessarily bother them in the same way as it would bother you or me?
I could make a single nerve cell make a muscle twitch with some lemon juice but would that be 'cruel'?

You can ask an Oyster, C4M, but I doubt you will get an answer, or even if you do, I doubt you understand their language.

Perhaps Dr Dolittle can help, or even Dr Beaver????
