Adrina Carmona asked the Naked Scientists:
Hi! I was woundering if you can help me with a question that has been bugging me lately.
Â
What part of the brain is triggered to wake us up from sleeping to allow us to know we need to urinate?
What do you think?
-
Normally, the brain stem cells that control arousal from sleep are influenced by two groups of nerve cells in the hypothalamus: a part of the brain that controls basic body cycles. One group of nerve cells, in the ventrolateral preoptic nucleus, contains the inhibitory neurotransmitters galanin and GABA. When these neurons fire, they are thought to turn off the arousal systems, causing sleep (damage to the ventrolateral preoptic nucleus produces ireversible insomnia). A second group of nerve cells in the lateral hypothalamus influences and suppresses REM sleep. They contain the neurotransmitter orexin, which provides an excitatory signal to the arousal system, particularly to the monoamine neurons.

The worst situation is when you are dreaming you are going to the toilet :-)
-
By which stage it's already too late. [:0][:0]
-
Not necessarily! I often dream I'm urinating, then I wake up in a panic thinking I've already done it, but I haven't, so I run to the loo instead!
-
Mee too almost same sort of situation!!!! [;D] [;D] [;D]
-
Me three.. but I dream I am needing to go so bad.and I keep looking for a appropriate private place to go where I am not exposed to others during that moment of reliving my bladder.
So I keep holding it untill finally I find a Loo that is totally private. Then awwww relief, but if I don't wake myself before that perfect loo and relief, its too late; So I have learned when in those dreams to wake up and get to the loo fast!
Same thing that time of the month ..if I dream about blood I am fine but if I actually see the blood in the dream...you know the full color red, then I must wake before I have bled out...So weird, I must say, but ones body has a way of knowing...how to warn you.
-
Oh thats strange. I never seem to start during the night, so have never had that problem. Is that even stranger?
-
Hmmm...seems fishy.
-
Lol..lol..well fishy she is named but true is my problem during those times... even I think its weird but it happened every time...
-
I bet it'll smell fishy too. [:0]
-
Lol..lol.. well I have heard stories of woman who have fishy odors in the nether regions..if you know what I mean.....? Lol...
-
Yep, I know
all too well [xx(]
-
Thus are the odors of human beings! Lol...

I still remember, as a young child, dreaming that I wanted to go to the toilet, so I got out of bed and went to the toilet, pointed my pyjama python (well more of a winceyette worm at that age) into the porcelain and relieved myself. Trouble was, I was still asleep and peeing down the stairs!!! I was woken by the sound of my parents bedroom door opening and then realised what I was doing. Boy did I get into some trouble over that!
-
Heehee! Poor fellow! [:D]
-

Of course men don't smell like cheesy fish paste then.... [xx(]
I have the recurrent dream that I am losing my teeth, sometimes its that they are wobbly and fall out, sometimes a whole strip of them comes out. Often I feel them loose in my mouth and have to spit them out, its bad!!!
-
I had a dream like that once!

I bet my youngest so could relate... and though he was probably 6 ...he was sleep walking and m daughter had come into lay down by the heat at the time as it was an extremely cold winter...she fell asleep by the wood stove.. anyway he sleptwalked into the front room pulled out his little penis and peed straight in her face... fortunately she woke up and immediately started screaming and trying to shield her faew and then pee began richocheting all over after hitting her.. butr still he continued peeing... He was still out cold..... sound asleep....... I had heard him go up the hall and new something was up.. but by the time I threw a gown on.. he had already passed the loo and I knew he was sleep walking.. I was too late... oh my she was sooooooooo furious!!!
I took him back to my room cleaned him up from the splattering and slipped him into new pj bottoms and tried to talk to him..but no good he was still in a sleep fog. eyes open but none home... I walked him back to bed tucked him in kissed his head and went back to help my daughter in the other room get things cleaned up... Had to run the steamer.... He was quite the sleep walker! Still is and he is 21 on the 19th of this month!
