Title: Why are LCD screens polarised in the orientation they are?

Hiya-
My question has to do with this topic:

Disappearing monitors - the power of polarisation

I understand how it all works just fine.  What I don't understand is why they choose the polarization of the screen the way they do.  The only time people notice polarization is when they wear polaroid sunglasses, the point being to block horizontal polarization.  If I were designing an LCD monitor or television or the display on a car stereo (my personal pet peeve) I would make sure the emitted light was vertically polarized instead of polarized horizontal or at 45 degrees, but apparently no one at the design desk has thought of this problem.

Thanks,
