I know it's just an optical illusion from the cropping but on first glance I thought the taxi was driving away.

I stretched the picture into a sort of keystone (trapezoid) shape to correct the vertical lines,
and cropped a rectangle out of this keystone.

This stretching distortion has changed the proportions / positions of objects in the scene.

Many reasons

Meter mail or its other name franked mail is for business customers and is provided at a reduced rate than the 1st & 2nd class stamps available to the public.
The business customers have machines that puts a printed impression on the envelope,this allows the royalmail to reduce the costs which are passed back to the customer.

1st and 2nd class Franked mail is also separated by the customer and placed in separate pouches which reduces its processing time again reducing costs.

Normal post boxes are also very old and not of a design that allows the use of pouches without blocking up and therefore boxes are supplied designed for the purpose.
Business post is also keep separate as businesses post more than your average member of the public and would fill up all of the boxes leaving no where for you and i to post are letters.

Franked mail is also sorted differently going through different machines than stamped mail.

Sometimes i wish i didn't know all this information.
