Post by: blandinevisha on 17/11/2009 17:17:09
Ok so I'm starting med school at Imperial in Oct, which is what I've always wanted to do etc etc but all of a sudden I'm REALLY scared about uni. I guess I am still looking forward to it, but is there anyone that is/isn't at imperial that can give me some good advice about starting uni/medicine/calming my NERVES!!!!

I'm not sure if this is strictly speaking advice, but does it help to know that I felt the same in 1984 when I got to Oxford to study chemistry?

What exactly is it that you're nervous about? The course? About getting there and deciding you don't like it after all? Or about not being to keep up with the work? Or is it about leaving home, and finding yourself in a strange place with a bunch of strangers who all seem a lot more confident and self-assured than you? Maybe a bit of some/all of the above?

If it's course related, then don't worry. Chances are you'll be more than capable of doing the work, otherwise they wouldn't have accepted you. If you decide you don't want to do medicine, then you can generally change courses. Even if you get all the way through and graduate and then decide you don't want to practice, there are plenty of things you can do with a medical degree.

If it's the social aspect, then again, don't worry! I'm sure lots of people put on the confident front, and I suppose some probably really are (but they're probably a bit arrogant, so best avoided!) but most people are quite nervous too.

The best advice I can give is don't miss the freshers events, and join lots of societies.
